well most guys in here will say rappy,. so post the same question in the 400ex thread to get results for both bikes.

i have a 400ex, but have ridden a 2001 rappy 660 back in 2000 haha so i dont remember much of it, but it is torquey and powerful, and it is sharp looking, well all of em are besides yamaha blue, i especially like the 01 colors black silver and white, or the new limited's but anyways....

I rode a rappy and a 400ex the sameday back in 2000, and i can afford to get any wheeler i want stock on the showroom floor, bvut ever since then, my dream wheeler has been a 400ex, it's undescribable to me why it's a great bike in my book, i love it, and would never get rid of it ever. I owned and got rid of within a year a 2003 DS650 baja, and that is a nice quad too. I have now is a 2005 YFZ450 (white n red no icky yami blue for me:D ) and still prefer to ride my ex over the Y.

But in here are more yami boys, im more honda guy, so id have to say ex, but try in both forums, good luck and whatever you get, share some pics.

I've got both, actually 2 '02 400ex's in different stages of modification, and an '02 Rappy jetted and piped. I love them all, but they are different beasts. The 400's are great for cruising even though they have enough power for just about any kind of riding short of all out racing.

My Rappy scares me sometimes. It is not as smooth riding as my 400's (they have suspension mods, the Rap doesn't yet) but damn, for sheer torque and power the Rappy is a BLAST! I can't decide which one i like best, so I keep and ride them all.

The 400's are pretty trouble free, just requiring regular maintenance so far. The Raptor is a little more finnicky, but not too bad. Carb adjustments are something you may have to get used to.

If you are looking for best all around comfortable riding, I'd say the 400. For the best kick in the pants (with an occasional threat of ejection) you can't beat the Raptor.

Just my two cents worth.

it all depends... i had a 400ex. I turned it into a 440 and a professionally set up MX bike. my friend has a raptor 660. Its fast but few things...

If your looking to get a track bike get the 400. If your looking to get a trail bike get the raptor. The raptor is narrow and high up. the 400ex is alittle lower to the ground and wider. You can also do a lot of stuff to the 400ex to make it a good bike. The work that i have done to mine, i can beat a raptor 660 on a track and dragging. As far as reliability... my 400ex broke down last year for the first time. The timing chain tensioner broke on it. Thats really it. When i took apart my engine everything else was fine on it. My friends raptor he does not really take care of it. He abuses it and does not change his oil regularly. the thing still runs, i have no idea how. So both bikes are good, just depends on what your gonna use it for.

400 EX ALL THE WAY!!!! IF IT WERE A 700, I'D VOTE FOR THAT. 660'S ARE A PAIN IN THE ARSE TO TUNE(TWO CARBS).

400 EX IS PROBABLY THE ALL TIME MOST RELIABLE QUAD EVER BUILT WITH A 250R INSPIRED CHASIS. CANT GO WRONG EXCEPT IN THE POWER DEPARTMENT.:ermm:

As the guy right before you posted the 400EX's chassis is not the same but it is "inspired by" the Honda 250R's.

only thing the raptor has over the 400ex is power, and in stock form its not by as much as ud think

As I said, got both. Overall, I would be willing to get rid of the Rappy if I had to, but I'd sure cry if I had to lose the better of my two 400ex's! I think the ride on the 400 is better, just not nearly as quick.

Had both for quite some time, just got rid of the EX - I'd hafta agree with most replies here too. EX is less tippy, seemingly a bit more nimble and easier to ride, but a little old-school in the power department. Raptor demands aggressive technique and always paying attention to the trail / track, but you are rewarded with stupid torque and power.
I ride in Upstate NY, and for tight woods the EX is more flickable, but on big, huge uphills and fire roads the 660 is king.

All of my buds have EX's, Raptor's, or Z400's, and honestly the rider really makes the difference in all but a few situations - I say (if you can) ride both side by side in the environment you intend to use them in and then decide :)

the 250r and 400ex have the same frame only the 250r has square tubeing and the 400 had round.... also the 400 is easyer to ride, less tipy and alot less power, i like my raptor becuse i dont have to shift all the time only from 2-3 .. my bud has a 400 hes goin from 2-4th all the time so thats a pain sometimes

Completely different bike, 155. The R was the 2 stroke from looooong ago, and they're still VERY fast, unlike the 250ex.

Bro definetley go with a 400ex, i mean its a honda u cant go wrong with it. But if ur looking for maximum power and not so much reliability then go with the 660

go ex, its probly the most reliable you can get, the rappys are top heavy and just big ol' heavy peices of metal with a sht load of TQ, yea there fast in a str8 line, but thats about the only place stock for stock the raptor would win (with = riders) track=ex trails a ex is still good pits the ex is ok but rappy will do a lill better sence they go in str8 lines lol

When I first got my raptor I will admit I would abuse it. Flipped it numerous times, never changed the oil when I was suppose to, Air filter use to stay dirty. But you know what it has never let me down. Everytime I push the start button it will turn over everytime. Everytime I flipped it, I let it sit for a sec and it cranked right up. I am alot better with the maintenance now and I love my raptor. I don't know about anybodys else's raptor but mines is very reliable.

Ever since i was little and the 400ex came out i said 1 day i will own 1 of those and it was my dream quad, this was before the other 400's and 450's. I just loved the looks of the 400ex and this year in january my dream came true owning a 2004 400ex. Took a few weeks for my excitement to calm down because every day when i woke up i thought wow i hve the quad i always dreamed of owning.

ANYWAYS BACK TO THE TOPIC... I love both 400ex and Raptor. the raptor is the only yamaha I would ever considering buying, they are fast and torquey and look awesome. 400ex is great how reliable and well it handles. Personal preference here on what you want to do, i think the 400ex is more versatile but either way you should be satisfyed.

I have 2 400ex's and a raptor and I have also had another raptor. While the raptor had a bigger kick in the pants, I would never trade 1 of my 400's for another raptor. The 400's are way more reliable and run really well. The 400ex is definently a very well built machine.

i have a raptor 660 and my dad has a raptor 700, and we have had 400ex's in the past. i love the handling of the 400, handles a lot like my 250. the raptor is faster:p , but to be honest, i think the handling factor is more important than the motor.

i own a 660 and 700, both have the common modifications. my friend rides a 400ex and its not even worth watching when we race. my 660 would beat the 400 pretty good but i would give the 400 a two bike headstart and my 700 would murder it. Never had any problems with my raptors. The 400 is top of the line as far as realiability goes. I look at the 400ex as a starter bike and you'll get used to the power after a few rides. It handles better than the 660 but that can easily be fixed with a wider axle and a-arms. I say ride both and pick the one thats right for you. :D

I think the rappy 700's handle better. Well, depending on the year.

06-07 were ok, but only had basic shocks.

But the 07 SE and 08, have some of the best shocks on the market!
Fully adjustable: compression, rebound, preload, high/low speed adjustment, ride height.

I rode one, and that is officially one of my dream quads.

When i turn 16 in 2 years, im getting a job, saving some money, and selling my 400ex. Im then gonna buy an 07 SE or 08.

But im plenty happy with the 400ex right now.

Oh and Foxhondarider:

Its funny how back in the day, the 400ex was the BIGGEST BADEST four-stroke you can buy! Now with all the 450s and such, they say it has a very mild motor slower than the other 400's
haha.
And dont even get me started on warriors. That simple SOHC 2-valve engine was actually the raptor of its time when it came out. EVeryone raved about it.

if its for trails id go 400ex if its power and speed go raptor and about being tippy go plus +4 on the axle and its a great trail bike .ive owned both the raptor is heavier the ex is lighter i cant throw the raptor around as good as the ex id say the weight is the only problem i have with my raptor.i rode a tippy quad the other day i wouldnt ever want to own but was kinda fun cause it would scare you in every turn lol a 2000 polaris scrambler 2wd 400 .felt like a supped up power wheels lol

My buddy has a 660 thats widened in the front and back. It is fast but it goes where ever IT wants to go not where you tell it to go. Which is quite scary on the trails. I just got a 440ex that i am rebuilding but i have not rode it yet. I am hoping to smoke that 660 when im finished. My friend and his bike probably weigh 200 lb more than me and my bike so will see.

hypersnyper good luck with beating the 660 ive never really had a problem in the woods with it not going where i wanted it to i just open her up in the curves and let it break loose and power through i got aftermarket shocks though could help with mine though.the only time it has a mind of it own is if im taking off fast on blacktop from lets say a intersection and i turn left or right while on the throttle they have a great amount of torque and will pack the front tires a inch of the blacktop for a long way and you wont even know it so thats the problem ive seen when you let up the throttle you will turn faster than you expect i opened mine up today on the highway and can catch traffic like there sitting still but for the woods i think i need a smaller gear i run a 13tooth i believe my 400ex was 14tooth it was perfect for highway and trails i want another one in my opinion there a great trail bike one of the best ever made.and a 440ex i think you will love it .also i know i have a yamaha but hondas are so much more reliable.

IMO the rappy is a better machine but I cant let my dad know that haha (I own the 400) but for reliability id get the 400ex

well, i just traded my 400ex... 426 kit... stage 2 hot cam and i had alot of visual mods... it looked good, and when i owned it, i loved it... i last week i traded for a 03 raptor... and all i can say is oh my god... i love it... the power, the look, the ride... other than on the track, its better all around, imo... my entire life i have been a honda guy, and in my heart i always will be, but i do love the raptor over the 400...

I have to say i really do love riding my buddies raptor 660, even though it goes where it wants, i think he needs to toe in the front tires a little bit, they kinda heal out a little. But the torque is awesome.... We have yet to race im still finishing up some odds and ends on my 440ex.
