Do you think it is bad to clean your filter with gas?

I will set a poll do you prefer cleaning with gas or in water?

What kind of filter are you talking about....foam or paper?

I have a K&N filter and I wash it with K&N filter cleaner. First, I spray the cleaner on it, then wait about 15-20 minutes to let it soak in and dissolve the dirt and debris. Then, I take it and put it under the sink (not to use water at high pressure) and wash the filter. Then, I let it air dry over night (one thing that I learned is that I put it in front of the refridgerater over night and then it's completely dry by the next day. You are not to dry it any other way (ex. hair dryer). After all of this, I reaply the filter with K&N filter oil, put the sealing grease on the edge of it, put my Outerwears back on, and bolt it on, ready to go,

My dad has a stock, foam filter on his z400. I washed that the other night. First, I used foam air filter cleaner, which, again, dissolves the dirt and debris. And, I also let that sit and soak in for about 15-20 minutes. Then, I washed it under the sink, too.

I once washed a foam filter with gasoline, and I did not notice that it harmed anything or not. But, I'm not sure.

Hope this helps you out a little bit.

I have watched my buddy clean his uni filter over and over in gas, I on the other hand have used strictly filter cleaner, soap and water. His filter literally fell in half one day, the glue just gets eaten by the gas. He used to laugh at me for how much time I put into cleaning my filters while he would just give his a dip and let them dry.

Now I'm laughing because he is now replacing filters left and right.

250ex for two years. stock filter. cleaned it twice a month in gas. not one problem.

i clean our prarie and recon's stock filter in gas every once and a while. zero problems there.

CR125: uni filter and moose racing. clean both in gas and oil after with bel ray foam filter oil (not aresol stuff) and i never have had a problem. last week sometime was the first time i didnt use gas. i cleaned my uni in dawn/warm water and i had to take the two layers apart and scrub really hard and the filter is still stained. im going to buy some real cleaner sometime soon and try that. if it doesnt work as well as gas, im going to start using gas again.

Just askin opinions, I clean my stock for about a year with gas and never had a problem.

I clean it in gas. But then soak it in water so get the gas out. Then let it dry and spray it with oil.

as much as everyone complains about gas prices...you'd think they would keep it for their vehicles, not washing your filters with it when there is some free water and cheap filter cleaner:confused:

I use the PJ1 filter spray after I'm done cleaning with gas.

I've had my Warrior since new in 1996. I immediately put a UNI filter on it. It has been cleaned AT LEAST 30 times in the past 11 years. Every time with GAS, then let to dry and sprayed with the PJ1 stuff.

I've never had any problems with it.

30 times in the last 11 years? Mine are done probably 30 times in one MX season which is only a few months long. I also have 5 filters I rotate around.

Considering that over the past 4 years it's only been cleaned at most twice and I've only ridden it approximately 5 times in that period, I don't clean it alot, but it hasn't needed cleaned alot. I don't ride in alot of mud and I still have my airbox lid installed. I've never raced either.

30 was a guess. I'd have to say that back in the day when I rode almost everyday, it was cleaned probably five times per year.

Thanks for your concern!!!

diesel or kerosene are much better than gas. I run diesel in my shop heater so I used that most of the time.

I recently switched to Honda oil filter oil and cleaner which is made by No Toil.

I too rotate filters...and the inner metal baskets. I have 3 of them I can use on any given weekend of riding.

i get a bucket and fill it with hose water then add a splash of kerosine or gas in there. just the little bit of that seems to help break through the dirt. after i clean it, i spray it down with the hose really well to make sure there isnt anything left over in there except water. let it dry over night and its ready to go!

idk about you guys but I use UNI filter oil (not the aresol) and its a PITA to get off. takes a long time but i know that oil is doing its job. Its super tacky and i have to use 10 different kinds of soap, but i finally get it cleaned...lol

FOr K and N filter use there filter kit.

For Foam use good ole dish soap and water. It may tak ea little more time but it may save your engine in the long run. Also gas makes the foam brital and it starts to fall apart
