I believe it goes like this:

225 is the width of the tire.
35 is the height of the tire from the wheel.
20 is the size of the wheel.

Actually the 35 is 35% of the width (225).

35%x225=78.75

So that means from the point where the bead of the tire is to the tread is 78.75 mm or 3.1 inches.

So overall the wheel be 3.1x2 = 6.2 + 20(wheel size)= 26.2 top to bottom height of entire wheel.

so what would 225/60/16 hight be?

also how wide (in inches) would 225-35-20 be?

Overall wheel would be a little over 26 1/2 inches tall.

also how wide (in inches) would 225-35-20 be?

225= a little over 8 3/4 inches wide.

I need tires with 20" rims what would be = to the size of the tires that are on it now and the rim with would need to be 8.5".

so can you give a tire that would be 26" from the bottom to the top of the tire and would be 8.5" wide?

how wide would 255-30-20 be?

alright first number is the width. no matter what the other numbers are, hte first one is the same. a 235/75-15 is teh same width as a 235/50-16

so to get 8.5 you need a tire that is a 215 about.
so to get 26" tall on a 20" wheel with a 215 tire you need the second number to be about a 35.

the tire size you need would be a 215/35-20. but that is a really skinny tire. what are these goin on? most stock tires are atleast a 235 unless it is a small car.

215's aren't that skinny. Most small cars come with 185-205. My Sonoma is supposed to run 205's but I'm running 215's because that's what the guy before me ran. 235's are relatively thick tires to go on a truck like an S-10 that isn't 4WD.

remember that width is the width of the tire, not necessary the tread patch.

The 235-85R16E's on my truck have a much narrower tread that the 225-40-17's on a friends car. The aspect ratio has a dramatic effect

Try this link:

or you can read this diagram that I made up a few days ago for the truck forum that I'm on, it describes how to correctly calculate your tires circumference so that you know what your speedo/odometer really are

I would need it to be low profile tires so 20" rims will fit..

So they need to be 26" from the bottom of the tire to the top of the tire. It needs to 8.5" wide.

They are going on a 2001 chevy s10

Sorry This is my friends account..

IMO they are skinny, but i run 305's on my truck :eek2:
most smaller trucks, my moms 2003 s-dime for example came with a 235/70-15. a smaller car like a cavalier comes with a 195-205 usually.

and yes, the tread is not really 215 but it is 215 at teh widest point on teh tire, usually the sidwall. on my 305/70-16 (33x12.5-16) the tread width is only aobut 10" wide while the overall width of the tire is 12.5".

look on the door of your truck and find out what size your stock tires are....then go from there... the guys on the s10 forum should be able to tell you what 20" tire and wheel setup will work best with how much you want to lower it. If you go with a different height tire from stock your going to through your speedo off and your odmeter...you'll have to state this on the title if you ever go to sell it because it wont be a true reading.
