Alright I just got a 2003 400ex this week and i was trying wheelies and I was doing one in first and i could get the bike up but couldnt keep it goin because in 1st gear the egine would run out of revs. Now I tried one in second gear and I could barely get the wheels off the ground. I let me friend try to see if it was just me, but the same results for him too. Now my question, is this because of the 22" wheels on the rear? Right now the big has 22" Razrs on the back and they are huge! Is that what the stock size is or would 20" wheels be more suitable?

20's are stock as far as i know, with 20" razrs i could walk my ex in 3rd completely stock

When I do it I get the front up in 1st and ride it out before you hit the rev limiter shift to 2nd and keep the throttle at about 1/2 to 3/4 with a little practice you will get it and be riding them thru 4th in no time.

stock it should not be hard to loft the wheels in second. should be able to do it with just a blip of the throttle and and body english.

I can wheelie really well on my ex. But I rode a stock one once, and first and second are no problem. Third might take a bump on the trail or a little clutch.

put your arse on the grab bar and give it a thumb full. it should come right up. or just do what i do and stand up

:huh You should have no problem poppin it up in 1st or second. Get your wait forward then lean back and hit the throttle at the same time and you should have no probs.(standing up is easier)

ok but do you guys think that the bigger 22" wheels could be a factor in this?

Kinda. Bigger tires make you have less torque and higher top speed. But still, you should be able to bring it up in second without much effort. Just go practice.

Yea it takes awhile, you just have to practice, now I can wheelie easy in 1st-4th and sometimes 5th depending on where I am in the power band, but then again I also have geared down to a 13t front sprocket, but you still should be able to do it easily in 2nd....

I can get my stock 400ex up with 22 razors in 5th down the road and go for a intersection. I can wheelie from 1 through 5th to.

im his friend, what i kinda mean is does it have the balls to pick the front wheels off the ground and do a wheelie in second? or do you have to lean back and pull up on it? I have a 450 and it pulls up easy in second but i figured the 400 would also because of the shorter wheelbase.

a 400 will definately come up in second. it doesnt take any body, just give it some gas.

i can lift my 400ex up in 1st-3rd nd i got 23 inch kenda bear claw.. i can do it in 1st nd 2nd without n e body, but 3rd i need to put my weight to the back.. soo just lean foward then lean back nd on ur way back nail the gass it should come right up nd if it dont there is eather somehting wronge wit u or the quad..

I can do it in 4th with just a push of the thumb. 5th barely takes a pull. but almost every quad ive ridden all the way down to 250ex's, stock with stock gearing would easily pull in 2nd with the lightest yank on the bars. not just the thumb pulls em up but its plenty easy enough to get em up enough to balance em. and if you run out of revs in first you arent high enough, you should be able to pop it up and stay in the low revs and balance it and never run out of revs.

also, its kinda scary at first, well not scary but you think youre gonna go over backwards, but if you start getting to the top of first you can either shift to 2nd or stay in first and rev it quick and get yourself just behind your balance point and let off, that way the compression of the engine slows you down as well as pushes you back forwards and you lose alot of speed this way and can be in the low revs. depending on your gearing and how high in the revs you are when you do this you could practically come back down some right around idle and start all over but never having let the front wheels touch. thats how I do it at least.
