I have no idea, one day I signed on and it said moderator by my name, figured i'd go with it.

No, actually the administrator picks the mods. He looks for some one who is more or less level headed and lets insults slide off their back without getting into flaming wars. Someone who enjoys helping the site without personal gain.
Thats what it said on page four of the training manual. :D
