I have a problem, after about maybe a minute or 2 of idleing my 400 starts to tick from the motor..it is usually coming from the right side of the motor, my dad thinks it's the timing chain, what do u guys think?

sounds like a timing chain to me. i had to replace mine when it was doing the same thing. i would recomend doing the crf450 timing chain upgrade, its cheaper, and more heavy duty.

Have you been into the engine?

Could be the decompression mechanism on the cam.
I know when I put my cam back in I forgot the little spring and dowel that activates the decomp mech and stops it when the engine is going forward.
If that's stuck, or missing, it lets the decomp mech slam around every time the cam spins.

Could be your problem.

these motors are really noisy. I would first check your valve lash. Maybe while your there pop off the cam cover and check the timing chain tension.

check the following valves, cam chain, cam chain tensioner right side i bet its either the cam chain or the cam chain tensioner both will cause a ticking noise especial if the tensioners broke its not putting the pressure on the chain to prevent it from whipping.

would that cause the engine not to run?
