Round #2 of this fast growing regional series is now in the books, as this past weekends event was held at Steel City Raceway located in Delmont,PA. On a weekend that was packed with local races, S.A.T. scoring and high school prom's, racers from all over still made the journey to battle the elevation and off-cambers that has made this track known. With a supercross style layout, the technical skill required to tame the track would be elevated for the quads as large uphill runs peaked into sections that offered large jumps and would challenge riders of all levels. Holding the throttle wide open would allow tons of airtime for those who had what it took to soar down the ski slope style jumps.

Riders would run in typical MX format, with each class getting two practice sessions. And once again, Pro AM would have a qualifier as entries numbered in the mid twenties, which speaks volumes for the following this series is developing.

With the National series sandwiching this round, the top Pro names were absent from the event as all were busily preparing for the upcoming events. The lack of talent however wasnt missing as top riders were on hand and the racing action would be every bit as exciting as round#1

One name that has been present for the first two rounds is the youth sensation and multi year champion, Joel Hetrick. Usually anyone who is not familiar with his riding ability is soon informed as he takes to the track and shows us all just why he holds national titles!

The large downhill jumps are spectacular, and I would imagine a bit un-nerving when other riders set sail behind you!

Pappy

Many of the jumps required a full throttle run out of a corner and a hard charge uphill to clear them

Pappy
05-07-2007, 02:24 PM
The off-camber sections were numerous, adding a different element to this race.

Pro AM rider Paul Gregg and Kyle Dammann work things out during practice

Pappy

The uphill step up section required not only a hard run, but the ability to stay on the gas at the base of the hill as there were water drainages running across the track.

Pappy
05-07-2007, 02:30 PM
One section on the furthest hill was a double double double section....that also went around a corner! Pro AM rider Randy Lehr made quick work of this obstacle and showed everyone how to do it on a quad!

Pappy

Other jumps would take some forthought as a wider line was needed to clear them.

The large track swallowed the 90cc riders as my view from the top shows. Cody Hill airs it out in the background as moto 1 was being run.

Charlie McVay was once again out front of the Youth Production 13-15 class and looked as fast as ever. Charlie's main competition thus far was injured in Georgia last weekend and was unable to compete. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing these racers battle later in the season!

Joshua Dains is a treebasher, but took the opportunity to race this MX event! I think secretly he was wishing for a down pour!

Track conditions varied, as a brisk cool wind dried the track as fast as they could water and prep it.

Being out front has it's advantages, vision being one of them!

Pro AM rider Randy Lehr was riding extremely well again this round, proving in practice that he had this track dialed in. As moto 1 was run, he was in a good position to see who he would have to get around to try and win his first Pro AM race of this series.

#99X Ricky Stair was off the gate in a blazing run to turn 1 and was leading Lehr and the rest of Pro AM

Ricky Stair was out front front when the checkered flag was dropped, edging Lehr in moto 1.

Pappy

the elevation changes provided some new perspectives for pictures, and new challenges for riders as braking became as important as going fast

I was on the other side of the track when I heard Pro AM fire up for their main. I hustled as fast as i could to try and catch the start but couldnt get in position fast enough. I could hear the roar as 20 riders screamed to the first turn and then the shift in sound told me turn two was fast approaching. Stopping at a spot that would allow me to catch the riders head down into the bottom section, I spotted a quad flipped and it was Paul Gregg. This was not shaping up to be his day.

When the field finally came into full view, it was 99X Ricky Stair in the lead followed by Justin Bres and Randy Lehr

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:24 PM
Stair and Bres set up for the down hill turn as Lehr remained in 3rd

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:26 PM
Lehr had charged into the second spot behind Stair and now the pair started pulling away from the pack

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:29 PM
As the field spread out near the completion of the first lap, I tried my best to keep tabs on everyone, to no avail. The action up front was close and although Stair had the lead, lehr was matching him turn by turn and jump by jump.

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:31 PM
Battles broke out everywhere as the second lap was underway.

Stair looks back to find Lehr on his grab bar!

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:34 PM
Lehr backed off just a touch as he went sailing through the double double double section

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:36 PM
Again, Lehr closed the gap with amazing downhill speed off the ski slope jump that once again put him on Stairs grab bar. If lehr wanted a win, the chance was coming as he started applying pressure

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:38 PM
Two turns later, Stair charged a bit to hard into the table section and Lehr saw his chance. At the flick of the throttle, Lehr attacked the section turning a single into a double passing Stairs and overtaking the lead!

Pappy
05-07-2007, 08:41 PM
Stair made a charge right back but over shot the last table and Lehr came out of the section holding the lead and riding for the win. This marked Lehr's first Pro AM victory of the season, and he backed it up by also wining both moto's in A class taking that win as well!

Jordan Kaufman #105 and #64 battled in the first moto and in the first round of this series and Kaufman was just ahead to take 2nd behind Hetrick.

This round looked to be a repeat

Pappy
05-08-2007, 01:13 PM
I reckon Walker had enough of following kaufman and set sail over a double to pass Kaufman and move into the 2nd spot! Kaufman never could mount a good charge, and Walker rode on to the 2nd spot for the main.

It will be interesting to watch next round as Walker has now shown he wants to be upfront and hopefully he can continue to improve!

Nice pics Pappy. We took the motor out yesterday and the engine ended up being cracked below the pipe. We are trying to find someone to weld it. Hopefully it will be back together by Milfield.
