Im picking up my new '03 kfx400 tonight, very excited.

Anyway, this guy had a K&N jet kit installed, but told me it had been jetted for a pipe, when all it really has is a K&N filter, outwears, and no airbox lid.

I drove it and its definitely not jetted in the right ballpark. It idles fine, but cuts hard lower-mid rpm, then takes off top end. my guess is its way rich because of the jetting for the pipe.

So what would be a good starting point for me to re-jet? please let me know basically where i have to be for fuel screw, main, needle, etc. elevation is roughly 200-600 feet

it sounds like you just need to turn the screw out a little . do you know what jets are in the carb?
what pipe you have ?

CHECK WHAT JET IT SAYS FOR YOUR ELEVATION AND WORK YOUR WAY FROM THERE. I HAVE A FULL PRO CIRCUIT EXHAUST AND A K&N FILTER, JET KIT, AND JUST DILLED HOLES IN MY AIR LID TO HELP KEEP MUD OUT. JETTING DOES SUCK, BUT START FROM WHERE THEY SAY AND WORK FROM THERE. GOOD LUCK
