I go to start the quad after sitting nearly a year and it is completely dead. Not even a green neutral light. So, how much should I look to pay for a battery and does it matter what kind.

Charge it first. Don't throw away your money.

mine is crappin out on me too. i think dealers want about 75 for a new one.
ive noticed with my higher compression big bore kit and cam, its even harder to start, so i'm gonna go with a battery from a 2001 cbr f4i, they have like 70 more cranking amps, but theyre twice as expensive. hell if i dont have to push start my bike on a trail its worth it.

i have this one... (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Battery-CTX9-BS-400EX-300EX-400Z-CBR-GSX-Y-YTX9BS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ10066QQihZ007QQi temZ170106552935QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

i am on my third one...the first one was sold to my brother in law when he needed one for his 300ex, that one was 4 years old, the second was in my 300ex at that time( and was going on 3 years when i sold the bike), and i bought the 3rd one to replace the one i sold...it is 2 years old and still cranking like new...they seem to start the bike a little easier and last longer for way less than the dealership

It might still be good. Just push start it and run around for a while and it should charge if not then it needs a new one or the fues is burnt.
