Hey im going to be getting a 02 or 03 CRF cam (which everone i can get easier) really soon and i Need to know som ethings. Are they straight drop in cams? I dont have to get one of those dial things right? I am new to the 450r motor and i have yet to open it up(warrenty just ran out) will i be able to switch it out without changing shims and such? If someone knows stuff about these cams please let me know. thanks

when i did my hotcam which isnt a crf cam but you dont need a dial or anyhting. how many hours are on the motor? i had about 100 on mine when i put a new cam in and i run mine pretty freakin hard and didnt need new shims, but it changes stories from bike to bike. CHECK OUT GHOTT'S VALVE ADJUSTMENT GUIDE it really helped me out and it shows you everything but to switch cams through the carrier. try hotcams website, they have videos of a crf (samething as a trx)

well i got the cam. I only paid $20.50 for it....lol. I am going to be putting it in next week if I dont need to be reshiming it, otherwise i will have to wait to re-shim it.

congradulations on your new cam, shims are not hard to do all you have to do is find what shim you need and go to your honda dealer (if they have them) and pick em up.

Your chances of not needing shims is REALLY slim.
Just go ahead and get the hot cams shim kit before u even open the bike up.

When I went from the HRC cam to the CRF 02 cam I had to reshim all 4 valves.

And where did u get a CRF cam for 20bux?!?!?!
I paid $120 for mine! lol!

What year did u get? 02 or 03?

i will second the idea of getting the hotcams kit. i just went in on a kit with my buddy and split the cost!!! the chances that we are going to need all 4 of the exact same shim are slim to none so it only made sense to do it that way. you are going to have to adjust the valves somewhere along the line anyway, and the kit just makes it that much easier.

All bikes are different. You may need to shim it, you may not. Your best bet would just be to get a shim kit.

Is the 02 crf cam that much better than the HRC cam?
Does anyone have specs on the 02 crf cam?

Not really, you just get the power in different areas. The newer HRC cam and the 02 CRF cam are pretty similar from my experience...if I remember right the HRC cam is a little more bottom end biased-the CRF cam has more mid. The older HRC cam is very top end biased.

haha I got the cam on ebay...lol. I should get it next week some time. So you guys are saying I may need to reshim. HOw about this. What if my valves are already in spec then will i not need them? I really dont wanna buy that entire kit right now, just because I dont have the money.

You really need to at least check them, and see if you need them or not. If you don't, then you are fine....but if you do need them it is a must...which means your bike will have to be down until you get them.

well being down is no problem for me. I dont joy ride. Only race. and right now, my races are every two weeks so thats plenty of time for me.

The 02 crf cam is a low to mid range cam and the HRC is more mid to top.

chad how can you tell which cam is low end and high end just from the graph?
the bigger the hump the more high end? Teach me how to read a graph

It really depends on the port. More lift doesn't mean more top end power. I found that out the hard way LOL.

I'm running the 02 CRF cam in my 04 450R and the valves had to be reshimmed.I would go ahead and get a shim kit just to play it safe.

If you're looking for more power on the bottom end i think you'll love the 02 CRF cam.
