The toughest part of the heat shield is all the darn holes. Take a dremel with a litle sand it to get the paint off first, then take the buffing tool to buff each hole. They can come out really nice!

steel wool works so much better than sandpaper
all ya need is a rough pad to get paint off and a fine pad to polish it

1. strip the paint.
2. Sand it down, starting from corse sandpaper to fine.
3. Use steel wool to get the sand paper scratches out.
4. then use some rubbing/polishing compound, car stuff works great.
5. use some mothers aluminum polisher/protector to put a NICE shine on it.
The more time u spend getting scratches out with the steel wool and the polishing compounds, the better it will look. I did it all by hand, no tools needed. It took me 45 minutes. not too bad. and i ride with it today and it holds up great. hope this helps.

No, it won't rust ! The heat sheild is made out of stainless; And the throttle cover is aluminum and it won't rust !

I only went to 220 grit, but i spent ALOT of time afterwards with the steel wool. I didnt have any higher grit sandpaper.
so wait does the heatshield rust or no
