I have a 2003 KFX400 with powernow, yoshi full exhaust, K&N filter, Big gun over rev. My buddy is interested, but he asked me if it was too much machine for him. The boy is about 5 '2'' tall and about 100lbs. Would you please give me your opinion?;)

If that kid rides that quad then you deserve to be put in jail for endangering a child. NO is the answer to your question. I used to have one and though nowhere near a 450, no kid that's 12yrs old or even that size and older should be on something like that. An accident waiting to happen.

And if a young kid that age comes on and bashes me for that then grow up and go buy a quad w/your own money instead of mommy and daddy's. The age says 16 should be youngest but that is not always right.

If a kid is 14 and like 200lbs and 6' tall then he could ride that thing easily. 5"2 and 100lbs would be like a ragdoll riding it. Completely unsafe.

has the kid ever ridden before? if he started young and has already tamed a 400ex or something then it would be a different story, the way your buddy had to ask if you think hed handle it makes me think different.

but I personally know quite a few 12/13 year olds who would handle it no problem. they are not new riders though.

yea u guys got a point but a year and a half ago i bought a blaster now im on a 265r and im 14, its riding skill and common sence. Anyone can get hurt on a quad age doesnt matter too much if they have sence. my point i wasted alot of money on mods, and the machine to have the blaster i would've been better off buyin a larger macine to start out with. Im 5'8 160 and i ride as good as any older person around and most the time safer.

I took the machine over to his house to ride. I governed it down to about 1/3 throttle and he did outstanding, even with the clutch. he has ridden four wheelers for about a 2 years and now rides his dads 450 grizzly extremelly well. So I did tell him about the machine having to much power for him. He did agree, but when I governed it down it was about perfect and like csr250r said you need to have common sense and now he can grow with the machine. I did tell the boys father about all the feedback. Thanks guys your opinions were very valuable. I just hope I sell this machine someday, so I can buy my new 450 KAWI.

it depends on how well he can ride. if did ok as u said then let him learn slowly. thats the best way to do it and that way he can grow into it. im 15 ive been riding for 2 years and my first quad was a banshee and that was wen i was 13 and much smaller than i am now. rite now im only 5'8 130lbs. i just took it slow and now i can ride my 250r and banshee no problem.

whoever said u need to be 16 to ride is not always the answer, there are tons of talented kids out there able to ride much more than 250cc. you ever seen the dirtbikes whats the age limit on those...... I still dont understand how the young ones can ride pretty much unlimited but yet we have age restrictions for the quads kinda baffling. If he can ride and feels comfortable on the quad then i say more power to the kid and let him ride. just like you said govern it down a bit and keep doing it until he can handle all the power, I think the most important thing here is the fact that he needs to wear full riding gear, seems alot of people worry more about what he can and cant handle then about having the gear.

maybe if he tunes it down alittle bit.. dont let the kid go wild on it and make him learn the machine till he knows it good. im 15.. 5'5 and 135lbs and have a 440ex i can handle no problem. but i have been riding for around 5 years.

if you want to make sure how hell ride it bring the kid to your house and let him ride it just make sure he goes really slow so he doesnt break anything:p

This is very tricky....back when I was about that age (1984) I had 7 years on a motorcycle, and 3 years on 3-wheelers. I made the progression from 70-110-185s and on occasion both my dad and my buddies dad would let us ride their ATC 250r's under their supervision. I was average height and weight, while my friend was much smaller but more experienced on ATC's.

That said, I can honestly tell you that as skilled as we were we both admit that on such powerful atv's we could have gotten into major problems had we not been 1) experienced and 2) supervised.

Both experienced riders, but still, way overmached for the power of the atv's.

my first quad is the 450r and i think it is still kinda slow i put a new cam and revbox on it and soon a piston and exhuast. i paid for it and NOT MY MOMMY AND DADDY. i have not even had it a year and can clear 70 ft tables. the first time i attempted the 70 footer i had the 450r for about 3 or four months. i really dont think there is a age limit on quads. I am only fourteen and got the 450r when i was 13.

pro rider, how did you pay for your 450 ?

my son is 13 and works as a farm hand, he has no where near enough to buy a 5k+ atv.

around here you have to be 16 to work "real jobs"

People are quick to judge about a kid riding big quads.

around here you can work a "real job" at 14

still hard to come up with your own earned green by 13

I wasnt saying it wasnt possible, just curious
maybe my son is going about it the wrong way.

shy of money in a trust or inherited I dont know anyone
that young who has worked enough to earn that kind of
dough.

My neighbor is 12 and rides a YZF 450. He has been riding for over 5 years and he can clear a 70 ft jump no problem. His bike is set up with extended A-arms, elka shocks, etc. Putting the boy on a bike this big clearly depends on his skill level. If he is going to be MXing, he can get hurt just as easily on a 300EX as he can a 400ex.

If I can ever find a way to post a picture in my posts, then I will add a picture that I have taken of him jumping 70ft.

Wow! Thats all I have to say. I'm 16 and have a 2004 400EX, Pretty much stock, and there's 14 year olds on here, riding 450R's?!?! I don't want to sound like a**hole, but I've been around and riding motorize toys since as long as I can remember. My little brother is 13, and riding a highly moded Z250 which he's kinda out growing, and could handle my 400EX, but we'll wait until he's 14. But what I'm trying to say is I can clear a 55ft. table on my EX and I'm 16. I highly doubt a 14 year old on a 450 can clear a 75 footer, I'm sure it's possible. But until I see it in person, your not fooling me. And the money thing, I doubt it a 13 and 14 year old can afford to buy a 450 by them self, I'm 16 and have 3 part time jobs, and still don't have enough money to do mods to my EX. I'm pretty sure your parents would have a helping hand in your buying of your quad.

yeah sitting between your dads legs

at 6 you would be doing good to pull the clutch in to shift
(if you could touch the shifter/footpegs)

Another concern is the riders wieght. My 10 year old is an excellent rider but i won't let him ride our 250ex because if it gets up on 2 wheels in a turn, he doesn't have enough body mass to keep it from going over.

i didnt read everything but if he fits the quad and u can turn it down he can learn on the quad,

whats sad is i was out riding sunday and this kid about 6-7 was on a artic cat 500 or so a huge quad and the kid could barly sit on the seat and reach the bars, he had no buisness on the quad let alone riding it alone and away from his parents and he had no helmet on, all in all it was a bad decision on the parents part and by the time i got back ready and on the quad they were gone cause i would have said something
