I am looking for some land to build a house on and am trying to decide the minimum acreage I should consider. I just want it to be private, no neighbors, a place where I can let my lab run, I can ride my quad around, build some jumps, have a pond, etc.

5, 10, 20, 50 acres? The less money I spend on land the more money I have for the house and garage.

10 acres will be enough. I just bought a peice yesterday at a steal price of 5 grand for a little over 1/2 acre. I an really excited about it. What is the going rate for acre in your area?

10 acres huh, that would be great pricewise. It is just really hard to picture how much land this is gonna be, I got carried away and starting looking at 20-50 acre parcels.

This depends, towards the country with good schools 10 acres would be $150K, if you go a little farther where the schools suck you can get 50 acres for the same $150K.

Well we have that to in the city, I guess we are just kinda lucky to be on the fringe where the city stops and we can still find farms and land.

my parents are on 10 acres...and its a great piece of land...its fairly big and its big enough to have room for a small little track and such.

We are selling an airport with like 30-40 acres... its going for $650,000 though!!!!

I wish there was cheaper land in my area. There's a .75 acre lot for sale at $225,000. Land also sells very quick too.

Land is expensive and goes up daily. Alot of things matter beside acreage though. Make sure to check the soil perc, water and power, access and involvement in a road association, and buildable lots nearby. Remember, just because a place is vacant now doesn't mean in ten years it wont be crowded. The property markers are the end of your controlled territory, so location is extrememly important. Places close to government land are real nice if you can score one of those. Best decision anyone can ever make is to own a chunk of land or a house.
Good luck!

Haha an acre around here would go around here for 600,000-million++. Its all knock downs around here in subdivisions. I live near Chicago in dupage county.

I would go 10 to 15 acres. A house with a nice size yard will take up a few acres, especially if you want to set it off the road a couple hundred feet. A polebarn/shop far enuff away from the house will take up another acre and then designate 5 acres for a track that is far enuff away to not creat alot of dust for both the house and barn. I'm woring on the same thing right now but finding the right piece of property isn't as easy as it sounds. I want mostly woods and rolling land so I can clear it the way I want and still be secluded. A wooded perimiter is what I'm looking for so I can clear inside and not be seen from the road. If you find the right wooded land the trees can put some cash back in your pocket as well. Black walnut brings big $$$
