i have a 2005 and love it! i havent got to ride an 06 yet but they are probably a little faster because they have higher compression and other things but i think they are both great bikes (b/c they are a honda) but the 06s are a little bit more money for parts but thats just bout it

if you decide to get an 06/07 i wouldnt recomend e-start just because i have heard many problems

pretty much there are 2 versions

the 04 and 05 are the same and the 06 and 07 are the same...

the 04/05 has a longer stroke and smaller bore making it a bit torquey and tracktable.. it also has a oil cooler

the 06/07 has a higher compression, a fcr carb, slightly different port design, the engine has been tilted alittle, different rear shock linkage swingarm and shock, the front camber has been changed slightly, and is availiable in e start or kick, and revs alot faster.

I preffer the 06-7 but alot of engine builders like the 04-5

do not buy a e start mine is an 07 and im very disapointed,it stalls bad when you stab the throttle,i took it to the honda dealership and they say thats normal, they have a different carb than a kickstart, but dennis kirk sells a kit 4 100 dollars that will fix my problem, not to mention that my starter clutch is already going bad, just not what i expected when i bought a brand new honda.

WTF? they both have the exact same carb and its easy to fix the short hesitation

another vote for 06/07, it seems honda fixed all their mistakes on this model

in my opinion you can't go wrong with any of them. i have a '07 and my brother has a '05. they are both very strong machines. to be honest i bought the '07 because i wanted a white one with the e start.

go with n 06 or 07....they fixed most of the problems with the 04/05s....buy a kick tho....i have n o6 kick that i race....been a great bike. in 06 they changed alot...i belive the carb is diff.also they changed the hight of the sprocket...can't rember all the other things but n 06/07 kick is the way to go

It really depends on what you are looking for in a bike. The years 04-05 are the same, as is 06-07....there is almost nothing identical between the two "versions" though, with the exception of a few little parts and options (of course).

The 06s and 07s are extremely easy to get power out of. They are far better than the older models when it comes to all out speed and power. It takes alot of work just to get the older models to keep up with a stocker 06+. More options also, of course.

The 04s and 05s handle very good...definately better for most riders. They turn sharp and easy, have more plush suspention, and are easier to jump and manuever.

When it comes to reliability, I don't think there is much of a difference. I have two engines for each year, and from my experience the 06+ engines have been holding up better. I know people that have had bad luck and good luck with both. Like I said...you could always get a runner, but you always have that chance of getting a lemon, too.

Personally, I like the 06+ bikes more. If speed is your game, then look no further. If you are on a strict budget or are more concerned about handling in stock trim, the 05 would be a better pick!

I havent rode an 06' plus year yet, but i will say this. From what i hear, in stock form (no internal engine mods, pipe, filter are ok) the 06' plus years are faster and have more horsepower, but the 04/05's handle better. When the internals in the engine start to get modded, the 04/05's will come out ahead. I have heard about many engine builders getting more power out of the older motors. honestly, i would say get an 04 or 05.... not because i have one, but because now-a-days you can buy one for 3-4 grand. the 06 plus years seem to go for 4500 or so used and a new one cost roughly 7 grand. It just seems better to buy an 04 or 05 and put a grand or 2 in it and blow an 06+ out of the water.

:blah:

Oh yeah.. and reliability wise.. it will all depend on how well you take care of it and how well it was taken care of before you. I dont think either is more reliable than the other, its all up to you how long it last.

they didn't fix anything with the 06-07 they created many more problems and thats why %80 of pro racer's are on the 04-05. more reliable, better handling and they do get more horsepower out of them. natalie and byrd both ride 05's thats all you need to know

yea cause what the pros ride matters when you are talking about buying a 04/05 or 06/07...tell me something what is stock on eather of them.....yea thats what i though....the only thing that might be n 05 is the motor and the only thing that is stock about them are the cases...

ya he's got a point, who cares what the pros are on? Nothing about a pro bike is like a honda anyone of us has, or probably ever will. Those pro bikes are $20,000+ easy. Back in 05(?) Doug Gust won the MX Championship aboard a Z400, beating all the 450's...guess i shoulda got a Z400 cause it beat all the 450's that year!

A friend of mine owns Harold Goodmans Z400 and it ripps in a B class in TT he killed the 450's in Ohio's national! but the if he plans to race ive heard alot of guys lookin for the 05... but if you could buy the 05 build it up and throw on that FCR carb thatd be the bike to run

Boy I am about more confused now? I have been looking at a few myself. A couple of them sound like they have been built really nice. The others are bone stock. I have been leaning more toward the bone stock one. I do know I will have less in the built one after I put it back to stock?

But the appeal of starting with a 06 450R motor that still has warranty on it, makes me lean that way.

Built 05 or stock 06

i talked to rage atv about this very thing, his words were that he liked the 06/7 motors better, that they were better when only slightly mod'd and have more potential than the 04/05's but there is a weakness in the base where once you get around 60hp shows up.... he also said that he is going to start producing a re-inforcement for this area.

the spindles can be changed quickly and cheaply, how cheap can you get the re-designed head on the 06/7s (which would force you to change everything from the crank up), or the FCR carb, the plus 1.25" swinger, the longer rear shock, new link, ....

and how much would it cost to lower the 1st gear and close 2nd like honda did in the 06/7's
