Which shocks should I go for?

Should I get 450r shocks, for cheap?

Or, should I pay money for performance shocks, and if so which are best for the money?

With 450r shocks on a 400ex you'll have to get them rebuilt for the setup or they won't perform 100%. For close to the same price you might be able to get into a decent set of works or even some elka econo shocks.

For that price I would still get the 450R fronts, have them rebuilt to work on the 400, and have the stocker rebuilt. For the money I dont think you can beat that setup.

Ditto. TCS are a great shock for the money. Works aren't bad for the money. My experience with Works are that they start out great but before long they feel as though they need a rebuild. While the TCS are more money on the front end, the TCS I have experience with seem to last longer between rebuilds. So, in the long run the TCS will probably save you money and IMHO are a better shock from the git go.

I don't have experience with putting the 450r shocks on a 400ex. So I can't compare that set up to another.

how much do you want to spend, depends on what you will get??

$2-300=450r shocks
$4-500=works/elka recs. or good used shocks w/ rezzies
$7-900=nice new adjustable shocks w/ rezzie

Can't beat TCS for the money for sure....I race mx and LOVE them. they are fully adjustable and have rezzies. I think you can get them for around 700 or so for standard travel.....about what you would spend on a set of 450r shocks and rebuild
