View Full Version : Changing a clutch
Im changing a clutch on my friends 300ex and I cant get the nut in the middle of the clutch basket off. The whole assembly just wants to spin when I try to losen it. I tried putting it into gear and it still wound not work. I also tried using a impact wrench too. How can I keep the clutch from spinning while trying to get the nut off.

possibly try holding in the clutch lever you would think an impact gun would work tho
an impact gun works the fastest. but if you don't have one you can do this: take off the spring plate, then get some washers that will fit over the outer diameter of the clutch springs. then tighten the springs down with the washers (usually 2 will hold it) and get a penny or piece of aluminum and place it between the clutch basket teeth and primary gear so it wedges in between the teeth. then you should be able to loosen and tighten the nut, it works for me everytime especially when you need to use a torque wrench.
I tried it but the penny just got smashed.
then try a strip of aluminum, at least 1/8" thick or more. you can buy small strips at home depot or ACE for a couple of bucks. i guarantee it will work i use it all the time.
Ok are the threads on the nut left hand or right hand?
they're normal right hand, left to loosen right to tighten. that nut is torqued to around 80ft lbs so it will be tight. also make sure you have the peened over part of the nut dug out of the notch.
OK I got it changed. Thanks alot for you help.
