400ex's are dry sump i assume because they have that big fatt lump infront of the engine and the crank case seems very small also is there any advantages to dry rather then wett

yes they are a dry sump system. as far as i know the advantages can be slightly cooler oil temps since the oil is not always in teh engine, and teh ability to hold more oil than a normal wet sump system.

Most four stroke quad engines are dry sump. A couple of advantages are that: the engine can be placed with a lower center of gravity because there's no need for a large engine oil pan, and because dry sump is better at keeping the engine lubricated under extreamly bouncy and hard cornering conditions. Wet sump systems don't oil well when the oil is sloshing around in the pan. With the oil reservoir located outside the engine, and being driven by another pump, oil pressure is maintained and continues to lubricate even through hard cornering.

and the rotating assembly will move more freely because the crank doesn't have to plow through all that oil.
