im in the market of buying a new atv. i am a good rider and have out grown my 06 250 so i should be getiing a bike by this summer, k so my question is wich would be better for me a 450r or a 400,im leaning towards the 400 cause of reverse but i really want the 450r, how is hte 450 in trails and is it a pain without reverse? thats the only thing im worried about the no reverse on the 450 . can any one give me some opinions

i was in your situation before i got my 450. Thought that there was no way i could afford to not get reverse but i went with the 450 anyway and i have to admit its not bad. Most of the time you can just spin a 180 but if not you just have to find a little hill and go up half way and roll back down if you dont want to push it. My buddy's all have 450's and no one has a problem with the no reverse thing ,but we tend to try and avoid situations where you would need reverse.

both are great trail quads. if your not blasting down the trails gncc style the go with the 400 but if you plan on riding hard down trails then get the 450. about the no reverse thing, if you have no where to spin around or pull off the trail it is very light and very easy to just pick up and turn around

well i was in same position as you..well i still am but figured it out now. should i get the 450...do i need all that power...what about reverse.....how will it handle in rocky muddy trails, i've asked all those questions and after riding a 450r for the first time today all i have to say is wow and i need to get one. i loved the thing. amazing power, pulled so hard through the gears. i have a warrior now and man i'll tell you what a difference. i found they do like to run so i think it would take some getting use to but once you get use to it its got to be awsome. as far as reverse yea its nice and can be very handy but theres ways of getting around it. like others said find a hill and roll back, just wip it around or even pick it up the things are so light. i say 450 all the way man.

go with the 450r. Its pretty light and you can just pick it up and spin it around. Make sure you get an 04 or 05 tho because of better turning

it really hasnt been a problem for me.... i actually dont mind not having it at all. really easy to throw around. the power and handling really did take me out of situations where i would need reverse. it spins and tracks correctly on a dime. my warrior was set up for tight and rocky stuff.... the r just does it better-stock!

a good set of tires and your set because the stocks arent the best haha. once you put the 200 bucks into meats you'll never look back on another bike.

depends on the trails you ride

when I think of the trails I ride.....there is not enough room to turn around, not even if I pick up the bike and trun it around. I ride a lot of these types of trails with my 450...with my family on their warriors. I am at a serve dissadvantage. Not only am I quite wide, my first gear quite tall, but I don't have reverse for those times it is needed. Before I bought my 450, back when I was riding the warrior...I would go up dirtbike trails...very techical. Today...I couldn't image doing them with my 450, it wouldn't be fun at all...truely... and I'm a damn good trail rider.

other than these trails, mud riding, and deep water crossing...my 450 works great everywhere else. That's only compairing to my modified warrior, which I would rather use for these places.

if you don't need the power than the ex is better for the trails suspention, reverse, gearing, turning radus.

i say go for the 450r because they are fast, light, fun to ride and i think the 400 has reverse issues but im not sure

you cant go wrong with a 450

I asked myself the same questions when i went to go get a new quad. Was going to get a Z400 with the reverse, but i couldn't pass up a 450R and i'm glad i didn't. All my buddys gave me crap about not having reverse and how they'll always have to help push it around when i get stuck. but i just got back this weekend from riding down in S. indiana at Haspin Acres, lots of mud, tight technical trails, and guess who never got stuck or needed help? thats right me! after giving me so much crap, i ended up helping out everyone else more then anyone helped me. Every trail i lined up with the 450 i took with ease. I have no worries about not having reverse anymore.

My 416ex is a 2001 so no reverse, but i started riding most of the trails around here on an atc 200x so I never needed reverse.
Now on my 450r I just find a small incline to ride up and back down, or I just whip it around 180. Im more of a track rider myself but I do ride trails from time to time.

My 416ex is at 49 or so inches wide and my R is right at 50 inches. I have no problems on 99% of the trails around here. Even those many say are tight. I have terrible vision too so that maybe why I like riding on tracks better.

Go with the 450. I ride mine on tight trails and even single track dirt bike stuff. They have better suspension and more power! They cost more $$$ than a 400 though.

if you get the 400 you will be happy, but....if you have need for speed..............

get the 450r and you can compete at any level, its fast on the drag strip, quick in the trails, dunes are soooooooo much fun.

reverse is nice (my wife and daughter have reverse on their atv)
if I want to strole through the trees on a sight seeing trip they are great, but I dont miss reverse at all when I get on the 450.

you dont need reverse if you have fast forward
