broken shift fork

troubleshooting a 2nd gear problem led me to a broken shift fork...but i can't find the broken off piece (1/2" or so). is it possible that this got chewed up in the gears? or could it have come out during the last oil change?

possably or you can take your clutch cover off and at the bottom is the oil pump screen

I don't imagine that gears could "eat" a shift fork completely. I bet it's hiding.
