well, i have a snorkeled out Honda Recon and with all the water and stuff, i just constantly have problems that are hard to figure out. my dads starting to get mad, so he told me to sell it. I have somebody looking at it for 3,000 and i have 1,000 saved up..

i found some 05 450Rs for 4,000 online. Is there anything i should wathc out for in the 450Rs? also, is 05' the first year they made the 450Rs?

just give me some advice on my i should get the 450r instead of the 400ex please...i love to do wheelie, and jump, and donuts, and all that good stuff. i want to stay with honda. either 400ex or 450R or suzuki.

i dont know TONS about the 450R or sport quads at that, but i know enough to get around so if you can just help me out, that'd be greatly appreciated.

The 450r was released in 04.The 05's had issues with the crank bearings in the bottom end.Try doing a search. If u just trail riding and everything else that u mentioned. It sounds like a 400ex would be better. The newer ex's have reverse too.

well, i'm gonna get serious with it. i plan on 'eventually' boring it over but i definately will mod it out. i will be jumping it all doing lots of tricks with it.

so, if i go with 450Rs, i should look into the 04s' or 06's?

what disadvantages are there of the 450Rs in general?

like that, would that be a good deal?

and sorry if this is a double post from previous threads before. forgot about the search button in forums and just wanted to explain what i'm really looking for. thanks for the help

You may want to dropp down 1 tooth on the front sprocket,to help out low end power.Thats about it.I really don't no about the 06-07.

have you ridden a 450r ?

compaired to the recon the 450r is a rocket.

heck the 400 is a rocket compaired to the 250 recon.
you may want to ride a 400 and a 450 before making a choice.

05 and newer 400ex have reverse.
06/07 450r's are faster stock but the 04/05 turn sharper
04/05 bearing problems, 06/07 starter problems
400ex can be found pretty cheap leaving money to mod.
and the 400ex is super reliable with millions of aftermarket parts.

The front sprocket is on your motor by the gear shifter.
And it's about $15

well, once i get the money from the kid whos buying my quad, i'm going to go to this race track near me. they rent out atvs. i cant rent a 450r but its $180 a day. i have spring break next week and my parents might split it with me. im dying to see how fast it really is.

i guess i'l really see what i really like once i ride the 450r but idk. i rode my friends 04' YZ 85 and that thing is pretty quick. (its a dirtbike)..

how much quicker would the 450r or 400ex be compared to a YZ 85? thats really all i can base it off since i havent really gotten to ride anything much bigger than my recon or a 250ex lol

hey man the only thing i have in mind is that if you ride trails you are goin to be a little dissapointed with the R because it doesnt have reverse. But, i have test driven them and rode my friends and they are pretty fast. and quick on accerlation if you like wheelies the 450 is for you but if you just want to mess around and have no interset in racing then i would go for the 400 fast and about 1-2 grand cheaper.

450rJam is right in his last post.Ck the 450r and the 400ex's out.Try to ride them. You really can't compare a 2 stroke power to a 4 stroke. And also a dirtbike to a quad.quads are a complete different world.Get which ever u feel more comfi on.they are both great quads

well, i decided i'm gonna spend the $180 at the racetrack near me to rent the 450R all day. but i thought the 04+ have reverse? do any years of the 450R have reverse? If not, thats not really too great for me lol...

how similar are the 400exs and the 300exs? my friends brother has a 300ex that i could probably test out if i wanted. my dealerships are extremely strict and AFTER i bought my quad, they wouldnt even let me ride it up the ramps into the truck. so i doubt i'll be able to test ride one.

but as far as trails and dissapppointed with the 450R, like, as far as what? i will be doing trail riding during the week since i cant go anywhere else but theres some bigger trails too. wiill i be able to slide turns and be able to go fast through the trails? i dont think anything can dissappoiont me when i'm leaving a LITTLE recon 250 , except for the no reverse part.

NONE OF THE 450RS HAVE EVER HAD REVERSE

Go for the 400ex

well, my friends blaster doesnt have reverse and its a pain in the a** to always have to turn it around but since i dont have the recon to make the new trails anymore, i dont think i'll be in really tight spaces. i think i can live without the reverse, and worst comes to worst, i get off and turn it around...

and sorry, didnt know they never had reverse. barely know a lot arbout these bikes

is there any special maintence or just in general, what type of maintence am i looking at? as i said, i dont really know anything about the sports

04-20-2007, 07:13 AM
keep the air filter clean, keep the chain lubed...regular oil changes, i suggest washing after every ride...

oh, ok. pretty much same as my recon except for the chain. shouldnt be too hard. oh man, i cant wait to get one !! lol

The 450R is a TON more maintenance than the recon. It is a race bike, and requires racing maintenance. The valves need to be kept in spec, and you will have to change fluids much more often, clean the filter a LOT, and rebuild more often.

how many hours do you think of riding before i'd have to get the valves adjusted again? my recon is very low mant. and now that i think about it again, this will be a lot of maintence form the sounds of it.

and what do you mean re-built more often, how often are you saying? year, 2 years? what? thanks

I think a year of riding is almost too long. Depends what you do with it and how you ride it, as well as how well you maintain it. Maintenance is key to longevity. If you are racing this thing, there is no way you are getting 2 years out of a motor.

wow, thats it? well, i'll be doing maintence all the time....ill have all the maintence done on time and pretty much will be riding hard alot.

do you think an engine re-build on this type of motor would be possible for 2 adults with some expierience with motors and stuff and 14 yr. old lol? we thought my recon needed an engine reuibld and would attempt it if we had to but since this is a more technical engine, do ya think it's possible for us to do it?

I've found it much easier to work on sport quads, much easier to get access to and take apart the engines. Chain drive helps a lot too. Anyone with tools, and basic mechanical skills can tear one of these down no problem with the manual. Not that hard, especially only doing a top end.

cool. and it'd be a good learning expierience for me too. i was kinda hoping but not at the same time that we'd have to rebuild my engine. i really wanted to learn but i just didnt want to have my quad apart all over the place.

and how come only the top end? why not the bottom? i would think after all the fast accelerations that the bottom end would have to be re-built. idk, i shouldnt talk lol, i dont know anything about these high-end engines.

A 450r would romp on a yz85 easy. Hell it would chew up a yz125 and spit it out to.
