my piston and compression is good on myex and i was told my cams might be broken or need replacement. all i have on the quad is a hmf slip on and planning on a uni air filter with outerwears eventually. What kind of cams do i need like a stage one or a stage 2? also what kind of power difference will i notice from a stock 400ex to a 400ex with the cams and slip on.

the cams will give you a good size boost in power. since your engine is mostly stock, i would go with a stage 1 cam.

i dont see how it could still run with a broken cam though:confused:

you can run stage 2. it gives you more topend

what would be better and what does the stage 1 give me?

imo stage 1 would do better on a mild engine. it gives more midrange and topend too

the most i'll ever have is a pipe and filter so stage 1 is for me if i need cams

Okay. Maybe no one else caught the smoke and liquid oil thing, but I really do not envy whatever severe engine damage you have. I will concur with what the people above me said about the cams.

A Stage 1 would be the best for you, a Stage 2 has great top end power but benefits more from a bored and a high comp piston and a P&P job. You still will feel a great improvment with a Stage 1.

will i gain horsepower froma cam and do i have to change jetting for cams?

You'll have alot more torque on the bottom end. You might have to go up one main jet size when you put a cam in.

cams arent just some magic MORE POWER mod that universally requires more gas. Jetting could be anywhere. MANY people I have seen drop a main when they run a stage 1, but raise a few when they put in a stage 2. Really, "stages" are a confusing generlization. Look at the lift and duration in comparison to the stock cam to get a bearing on fuel consumption as compared to the OEM setup. Also compare the hotcams to reviews and tech specs of other companies' cams like webcams, and the fuel mixtures of people who use their products. After all, a hotcamse stg. 1 in your bike could mean two steps up, and a stg. 1 in my bike could mean one step up. Tune for power and plug color, and most importantly, tune for YOUR BIKE. (Not somebody's in Puerto Rico.)

I would worry about the problems at hand before purchasing a cam. You have oil and smoke coming out the exhaust... That is not good, I would tear it apart and see what is going on.

i have a 400ex and was thinking stage 2..... but i mostly ride with a k&n and stock exhaust, fmf s/o when i race, would a stage 1 be best then? and does it matter if i wanna run my stock exhaust with the cam?
