Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards here, and Just bought an 04 450R about a week ago. I went riding this past weekend and realized that what I have been reading about 1st gear being so high was true. It was great on the open straightaways, but when I was trail riding through the woods it was hard to even hit 2nd. Anyway, I ordered a 13 tooth and a 12 tooth sprocket to see which one was better, but what sould I start off with??? Will the 13 tooth be okay, or will I need to use the 12??? I dont race or even top out in 5th anyway, so I'm not worried about loosing the top end speed, I just dont want to trash out first gear by riding in it all day. I'll probablly end up just trying both to see which one I like better, but I wasnt sure how much of a difference 1 or 2 teeth would really make. At the same Time I dont want to put the 12 tooth sprocket on and not even have a first gear thats usable or be at the point where I'm shifting constantly
Thanks for any help!

From research and personal preference go with the 13.

I would recommend the 13 and once you get an exhaust and cam in it you might go back to the stock gearing.

Okay, Sounds good, Looks like I'll try the 13 tooth sprocket first. When would someone use the 12 tooth????

14/39 works great with an HRC kit and a pipe.

I do alot of woods riding and hillclimbing. The trails have rocks and some tight swichbacks. My gearing was 12/38 and I mostly use 2nd,3rd sometimes I hit 4th. I just put 13/38 after I hit my woods trails I'll report. I did like the 12/38 front end pulls up real easy.

Most the trails I rode with my 20 inch razr 1's had to clutch a bit more but was fine with stock gearing. I know been riding with my 18's and still on stock gearing. Im thinking its time for a 36 tooth rear to get off the rev limiter as much. I ride sandy tracks mostly and let me tell you with my hrc sparks piped r anything lower gearing wise id never stop either spinning or wheeling. I find stock gears is ok with the 18's for the really tight stuff I like to slide around every turn, weather or not its a burm I slide so the 18's made that super easy.
