I have a 2003 400ex. since i bought it I have added a slip on, UNI air filter, and removed the air box lid. When adding these i re-jetted the carb with a 155 main and 42 pilot and clip on 3rd groove. Now it doesn't start as well, has slight hesitation when you crack the throttle, and puffs black smoke when you get into the gas good. I have adjusted the mixture screw in, but still seems rich. The jets I took out were a 38 pilot, and 142 main, clip on third groove and mixture screw 2 3/4 turns out. my main riding temps are between 60 and 90 degrees. If I go back to these settings will I be to lean? Definately started and ran better before!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

Try a 152 main and a 40 pilot. Turn the fuel screw to 2 1/4 or 2 1/2. That might be what you need. Actually you might not even need the 40. For your temps you might be good with the 38 and the screw at 2 3/4.Whats your elevation? that's important to know also.

the 155 main and the 42 pilot sound good, put your clip on the fourth slot from the top see if that helps. a 152 will be to lean.

He's rich now leaving the jetting and adding more fuel through the needle will give it more fuel in the middle.

go down to a 40 pilot and leave the 155 main.

my quad is down for repairs and while it is all apart I'm thinking very hard about the stage 1 cam. Will there be a noticeable difference? and how will this change the carb set-up I will want to use?

You will have to up 1 or 2 on your main.
