I was on another site comparing the 05/06 400ex to the older ones and it said that the new ones have a 38mm carb and the old ones are a 35.5. Is this correct and if so would it be worth it to buy the newer carb for my 400 for more power?

I did the exact thing you are looking to do. go to search and type in carb question and look for the thread started by me oldschool73 . I bought an05/06 carb and installed it on my 03 . They are similar carbs with just slight differences . $132.00 for a brand new carb on a buy it now on ebay. They said they had 10 of them so I'm sure there are some left. They even come from a honda dealership in the factory honda box. read the thread it answers all questions . i don't know how to link it to you or I would.

It definately ran smoother, starts better as far a a noticeable performance upgrade,No but mine is almost bone stock except for a K&N filter. you would be better off with some other mods for a performance gain, ie. pipe, jetting, cam etc etc
