Well I'll go ahead and give ya the bad news...good synthetic oil is gonna run about $7 ta $8 a quart. I run maxima 15w-50 but have also run mobil 1 V-twin motorcycle oil 20w-50 and you can pick that stuff up at wallyworld too..:D

wouldn't 15w50 be a bit thick come winter. In summer i can understand but in winter is realy thick.

The reason i'm asking is i bought a 400ex from a repot guy and i don't know what the guy was putting in it. For some reason since i changed it's oil it started burning it.. I figure he was running a synthetic oil and wen i changed it to regular it did not like it. I thought i'd change it to synthetic and see what it does.:devil

I am using Golden Sprectrol 20w-50 in the summer and 10w-40 in the winter. I have used Castrol before but I notice my clutch slip more with it. I have Mobile 1 in right now and it seems to be working alright.
Try the synthetic and see if it helps with the smoking problems. If not then it could be one of 2 things, the vavle seals are leaking or it is leaking by the rings. If that is the case it would be a good time to make it a 416. :D

yes and no, If you look in your owners manual it gives a list of oil weights and temp ranges. If you stay in that range you will be fine. However lets say it is summer time and you normally put in 20w-50 and you put in straight 10w. Then you will have a problem.

This is going back some time ago, way back when synthetics first came out. From what I read, if you had a motor with some miles on it and switched to synthetic, it was more likely to start burning oil than if you switched from a synthetic to regular. I could be wrong.....:o
