Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum. The forum members appear to be active and knowledgeable, so here it goes. I have decided that I am going to purchase a slightly used 400ex and was wondering if there are any mechanical differences in the new 400ex's vs the older ones. Is there a best year? A year to avoid? Thanks for any and all info.

From What i understand, The ONLY differences between any 400ex is this..
older models, on the side of the seat cousion, it says fortraxx, on newer models like mine it just says honda. i belive every thing mechanicaly is exactly the same.

'01 and up have a rubber flap that goes over the battery..

I thought I read somewhere that 2 off the bolts that hold the plastic on the 99's are hex head, and on '00 + up they are allens..

Doesn't matter much, neither are a very big deal :D

Couple Things are different!

My 2001 when it was stock smoked 99-00

reasons why

01-they changed the swirl pattern on the head
01-they changed the ignition modules, stock one are diff

other stuff-
mainly just the seat

this is all info i have been told by fellow ex riders

Any 400ex is a good 400!!! The only differences are so smal you would not need to worry about them... Not like a Yamaha or Cannondale.. after the first year of the Raptor they changed quite a few things, same as Cannondale's FX440

the carb boot on the 99 was not all rubber,(its like $30 and takes about 30 mins to replace) this lead to premature cracking where the rubber met the aluminum, the 00 and up are fully coated in rubber and if you buy them now it is the updated version. the side panels on the 99 are held on by phillips head. the 2002 is allen head. dont know when they switched. dont know about anything else.

this is all info i have been told by fellow ex riders You sure the info about the swirl pattern and ignition modules is correct? Honda only shows one part number for the head and ignition pieces. If they were in fact different they'd have to specify by having different part numbers. In order to change a head's swirl pattern you'd have to cast the intake runners or combustion chamber differently.

Thank you all for your insight on the 400ex. It appears that there is not big difference between 99-00-01-02's, so I guess I will buy the best-kept 400ex I can find for $4000-4300. If you have more info share, by all means share it! My hunt has commenced.:devil
