View Full Version : Need help I'm a Honda dummy
Guys,
I just bought a 2002 400EX for my grandson. I have a 06 Z400 Suzuki so I know them pretty well, but know squat on the 400EX. I need to know part compatability for the 02, how far up in model years can I go and stuff still boltup without major modifications? Mostly looking to make some shock/suspension upgrades without spending a bundle since my 15 year old grandson just "THINKS" he wants to start mxing with me. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Mark

everything 99-04 will fit on eachother. nothing changed through out those years. 05-07 gained reverse, different plastic and some other small stuff.
Thanks for the info, give me a starting place.

as for suspension upgrades, a nice upgrade is 450r shocks, and then send them to GT thunder for a rebuild with what ever you want done to them
any other questions?
I did that with my 06 Z400 shocks, and that was the best $780 I ever spent. Unfortunetly my grandson has very limited experiance riding quads and all that is on auto trannys, so I'm gonna have to teach him the fine art of using a clutch and shifting gears, Wonder what will break first, my patience or the clutch

You also cant interchange front sprockets between the 99-04's and the 05-07's.... umm shocks are the some for sure, along with pretty much everything but what I mentioned and the plastics... im sure parts of the tranny are different too but you prob wont be venturing there...

450r shocks will fit. 250r shocks will fit with slight modding. 250r axels will fit but the hub splines are different so you would need a 250r axel and hubs. z400/kfx400, 250x, 250ex, 300ex, 400ex and 450r wheels and tires will fit.
Thanks again or the info, keep it coming, will make getting this thing race ready for my grandson alot easier

If you do anything electrical the 05-07 connections are different from the 99-04. I installed a dynatek programmable ignition and you have to plug into the constant twelve volt source and I have an 04 ex with a 05-07 dyna and the plugs didn't match.

honestly if it is your grandsons first quad of that type i would keep it stock. The shocks and power are very good for a starter platform and i'd let him get used to how they work before upgrading.
