alright guys, I just talked to neil about doing a cylinder for me and we kind of decided on a 270 based on what i was looking for. He said he could also get me a 310 but it would be twice the price. What experience do you have with a 270/265 in a stock cylinder. Is is worth it or would I be much happier in getting the 310. I just dont want to spend the money if i dont have too. Neil said it would be a good motor but i am a newbie to 250r's and not sure what motor upgrades will get me or what I will be like. Just afraid of getting the 270 and not having enough power. Any thoughts?

My first quad I ever bought was a stock, lightly ported 250R. It was fast for me and then I just fell in love with it. I wanted to buy another R and get something like a 310 ... so I found one for dirt cheap, it was a stock cylinder resleeved to 310cc. WOW! The power was amazing on it, I'll never look back to a smaller motor. I have a ESR 310PV on the way, Neil is porting it as we speak.

I've only been riding atv's for a year now and I'm already on a 310. If you're like me and you really gotta go fast sometimes or just wanna be able to do wheelies in 4th gear ... get a 310. I can still putt around with this 310 resleeve on a CR ignition setup, but the PV will be easier to putt around on.

4th gear wheelies were no problem on my completely stock and original engine with a pipe and filter, and i could pull 5th gear wheelies with the 265.... with stock gearing...

You're prolly back further on the seat than I am. I have size 14 boots and well its hard to get my foot under the shifter ... if i'm up by the gas tank I can shift easier.

I know I can do wheelies in 5th no problem ... if I take my foot out from under the shifter and scoot back!

A 270 not having enough power? :huh

Have you ever ridden a 250r?

I've been riding since I was 9 and my 250r can still scare the hell out of me.

I can be cruisin in 6th, lean back and pull and pick it up, so I've done a 6th gear wheelie, on the road/good traction.

not with your R with stock gearing and without a bump to pick up the front end

obviously if money isnt an issue go with the 310.
but a 270 can give almost as much as that 310 will. I loved my sparks 270 engine, I wished it never seized :o

A properly ported 270 should have plenty enough power for you. It will be a world of improvement over a stock cylinder.

As far as "how much power do I need?", it really depends on your riding style. If you were dune riding and did lots of sand drags, then I would definitely reccommend a 310, or even larger if your budget can handle it. But for general recreational riding, a 270 is plenty.

Im purely a recreational rider but with a ESR 310PV setup. Wouldnt drop it down a notch ever, love the power.

just to throw in my 2 cents worth i just built a esr 310 with a +4 stroked crank and mild porting and the power is incredible. The crank gives more bottom end grunt without losing top end pull so you get the best of both worlds.....lil more pricey tho but imo it was worth it.

this is exactly what i did, neil ported it in the low- mid, and put a 69.5mm piston, i'm in the brakeing process still, but in a few small accelarations, i can feel a beast. i added a custris sparks mx pipe, along with vforce reeds, stock carb with 60 pilot and 180 main, later i will fine tune the jetting, for now i have it in the lean side using 1:20 mix, 3 mm spacer and stock gasket with 1/8mm gasket to get the compresion down to 180. the next step will be a strocker crank.

Wrong.

I was riding in 6th gear and pulled it up almost to the balancing point.

I jump up and down on the pegs to preload the suspension then on like the 3rd time it goes up take the wieght off and get on it and pull up.

Don't tell me I'm lieing for something I did.
