ok on my ranger when i lock the front hubs whether or not i put it in 4wd when i move forward the steering wheel rocks back and forth so much i can barely hold it still. Any ideas? maybe a u joint?

Hmm, sounds like you have something froze like a U joint in the hub. I would suggest running this past the crew over at www.gl4x4.com or www.wegotmud.com loads of good ford guys there.

is the front end locked? i know with a locker, spool, or welded it can make things a little hairy with the front end locked together. with the hubs unlocked you would feel no ill effects of it, but when you lock it together it would make things a little funny steering, whether in 4wd or not.

no its not locked in the front....im thinking something along the line of a u joint but am not sure..it does it when the hubs r locked even if its not in 4wd.

Well if it does it when the hubs are in and the transfer case is not then you know its between the t case and front wheels. Most likely what they said a u joint someplace. If your feeling it in your steering then its not likely your front gears or drive shaft so you can eliminate those. If its a IFS truck look at your CV shafts and make sure they are ok.

Do you have manual hubs on it? They should be the automatic hubs from the factory. Are you doing this on pavement, because in 4x4 on pavement any 4x4 will have a nasty pull to it... I too have a 97 ranger and am putting in manual hubs either this week or next, I destroyed my drivers side hub...:ermm:

So its the u join in the middle of the front axle? or one of the u joints in the hubs?

The u-joint in/by the spindle.

Bad as in what way? They can be worn out and squeaking but as long as they are not froze up it will not jerk the sterring wheel.
