Well I am about to do a bunch of selling and am trying to determine what some fair asking prices are.

I am looking to get rid of my 2005 400ex. It is in mint condition. I bought it as a leftover in 2006 2 months before the big floods hit in NY. So now my riding area got whiped out. I can only ride at my parents which is a 3 hr drive. So it gets ridden about once a month if I am lucky. Its never been rolled, wrecked, or anything. I am thinking of asking $4,200 firm.

Now I wouldn't mind picking up a 250ex. It has to be an 2006 and up so it has the sport clutch. Mainly because I want something fun, but something that I can take easy ride w/ my nephew too (he's 6). I can't really take easy rides on the 400ex. When I am riding in groups at my parents I am never out of 1st gear. If I trade I was thinking my 400ex for a 250ex + $1,500 cash.

I also have my brothers 2003 YZ450F dirtbike that I need to sell. He bought it as a leftover in 2004. He is in the same situation as me. He lives an hour away so it is barely ever ridden (2 weekends a month at most). It has the original tires and they are barely worn. Unfortunately he was killed in an automobile accident last summer and it has been sitting ever since. Its too much for anyone to ride, no one wants it, and his wife could use the cash. I was thinking $3,500 firm.

Let me know what you realistically think of these prices. Thanks in advance guys.

an 05 400ex + 1500$ for an 06-07 250ex...that sounds way off

The suggested difference between the two on KBB is around $1,100 or so. Do you think I should be asking more than $1,500 or less on a trade?

I'd be more thinking.. (04 400ex) for (05 250ex & $1500)

i'm thinkin you should just keep the 400....its always a bad decision to downgrade on a quad.

The pluses for me:
- able to be more relaxed on group rides (even when I lead, I am never out of 1st it seams)
- easier to give my nephew and kids a ride
- i can put it in 2nd and let the kiddies drive and control the throttle once we are in a field
- shaft drive, no chain to maintain
- higher ground clearance
- able to let others take it for a spin (not standard)

I say all this because I actually already have a 2006 250ex that I got my fiancee. The issue is she loves it, never wants to give it up, and hates the 400ex. Overall I'd say I want a 250ex type of ride about 80% of the time. Plus w/ the sport clutch it is a lot of fun anyway.

Its like a pit bike. Its more fun to ride a slow machine fast ....
