I bought my 400ex used and not running. I should have it rebuilt soon.
I pulled the carb apart today to see what jets it had in it.
Its all stock jets, with a 502 pilot. Not a mikuni jet.

I am running: weisco 10:1, stage 1 cam, whitebros R4 pipe, uni filter with box lid and snorkel on.

Does that 502 sound right? I dont know what brand the jet is.

502 doesn't sound right for any brand. I thought you typed it wrong at first but you typed it twice so I hope you didn't mistype twice.

502 doesn't make any sense. But anyway start with a 158 main.

Oh god, I dont know whats wrong with me. Its a 152.

I even looked twice to make sure its a 502 because that sounded rediculus to me too. Im not drunk or high. Unbeleivable.

A 152 might be a tad lean, try a 155 main. Do you have any problems with hesatation at all?

The thing is that I bought it not running, so I havent got to see how it runs yet. So you think a 155 would be better?

I would try it with the 152 in it first just so I know where you are at, but if you want you can put the 155 in does'nt matter.

Hey there Dr. Jet, you don't happen to be around central WI would you. I would just bring my wheeler over to you...hehe. Been having trouble since I put an 05-06 carb on it. Don't know off hand right now whats in it (we're rebuilding the whole machine, except motor). By the way, I've never had my valves adjusted since it was new 2000, (my bad) but it doesnt have, I would say over 120 hrs on it and I checked them today and I can even get the gauge in there. Is it possible for them to tighten up instead of loosen??

We ride up by Antigo alot and a little by Winter if your ever around.

Tightening can be more common than loosening--especially for intakes. As the valve and the valve seat wear it is able to sit higher up in the head, thus closing the clearence between the top of the valve stem and the rocker.

I wouldn't ride until the valves are adjusted properly. A tight valve can lead to a broken valve which can lead to a destroyed top end.

hontr35 if you live in Tigerton then i'm only 50 miles away from you, I live in Suring. If you get a chance look at a map.

Tell you the truth I never adjusted my valves sense (it's been 3 years) I bought my quad but now my quad has no power so I think my valves got tight or something so now it's at the shop being worked on.

If you have the 05-06 carb buy an adjustable needle for it,saves the trouble of trying to shim the stock needle.

Yep I know where Suring is. Been through there once or twice. My wheeler sat for 3 years without ever being started once, just got it out last year. Thats why the low hours.

Thanks for the info GP, I will definately not run it until I get the valves checked out. About how much will the dealer charge for that? Kinda don't want to screw it up, seeing as how I have around $7g's stuck into this thing (and that's with no motor mods).

Where could I get one of those adjustable needles from?

Take it to Antigo that's where mine currenly is sitting, they charge $58 an hour. The place is called Vern's Motorsports or Powersports something like that.

You can get the needle from that place that I just mentioned or at any honda place.
