I have an 06 450ER with the R conversion. Motor rebuilt over the winter, along with a new starter clutch, etc. Valves and compression adjusted a month or so ago. Quad has been running and starting great. Has 2 GNCC and 1 local race as well as a few rides on it. Rode the other night, ran fine, unloaded at the car wash to spray it off. Went to start it to load it back up, nothing..wouldn't electric start or kick over, so I figure I have some sort of electrical/water short. I went over all the electrical yesterday and today, made sure all connections were dry and had di-electric grease on them, I did find one wire that was frayed but still getting a connection close to the fuse, so I fixed that, disconnected kill switch, changed spark plug (checked for spark and it was there). Drained carb bowl, check jets for dirt, etc, nothing there either. I then figured maybe it was the CDI, so I borrowed a buddies. I then kicked the motor over, it fired right up. I then put my old CDI back in, and it fired right up again. I let it warm up and then tried to electric start it. It finally started but its cranks for too long. It starts with the electric start maybe 1 out of 10 times. With the kick start, it fires on the first kick when the motor is warmed up.

Could it possibly be a compression/decompression issue?

whats involved in totally removing all electric start components/wiring, etc?

make sure your battery is full charged, and check the decomp.
turn the idle up a little.

It just doesn't make sense going from running/starting great to nothing.

I go to school in lexington and and have a 06 er. my starter clutch went out last week and my bike is now in lexington being fixed, I have until monday to decide whether or not i am going to have them install a kicker conversion. What did the parts cost you and do you have a the list of parts? Do you know anyone around Lex that is parting an 06 or 07 out? I too am thinking about eliminating the battery and starter....I'm pretty sure we're going to have to replace the wireing harness and the parts that replaced the hot start for the ER version.

to eliminate the e-start components, you must buy the kicker CDI, wire harness, and carb w/hotstart, along with a few odd and end parts.

I had problems starting mine too and found it was the intake valves. I shimmed and a week later they were out again. Then again......If yours go out again anytime soon I would replace them before you toast your head like I did. I got to the smallest shim and then my head cracked. I would replace them w/ stainless valves asap.
