Can anyone tell me how to determine what year gas tank I have?

I wanted to order a billet gas cap but I was told when I went to order that it would only fit the 88-89 250R.

I have no idea what year tank I have for my project.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

One way to tell if you have an 86-87 tank is by looking at the side of it. There is a rubber strip that is held on by 3 phillips head screws. 88-89 tanks were red color only and had a black rubber strip that was glued on. I think 86-87 gas tanks used a different gas cap then 88-89 tanks as well.

All of the above is correct...You can order a gas cap for the 86-87 from Duncan racing...I got one on the way I'll post a pic of it when it gets here if you would like.;)

my 88 doesnt have anything on the sides, the 86 had the red strip with the screws. I didnt that would affect the gas caps. I can go check and see if they swap......

The '86 tank came on the '86 R, and the '87 came on the '87 R?

:D

There is a difference, while it's not important, it tells you exactly what year it came from.

well when you have that many R's (see his sig) I guess you can pick up on each minute detail ;)

Im going to guess its either a slightly different mounting or the 20:1 ratio imprint??

one of these days :p I'll have an 85 and 86 ATC and one each of a 86 to 89 TRX along with maybe a laegers and roll framed R's. That would be flippin sweet :macho

We have a winner, 86 tanks have two phillips head screws with black grommets on each side. 87's only have one per side.
