Depends on the year. Not 100% sure but I think only the '04 and '05 needed the resistor.

we have 2 o5 yfzs without headlights one has never had the headlights since we bought it about 6 months ago no problems.
The other one we took the headlights off about 4 months ago and last month we had alot of problems, put the headlights back on no more problem. I have since put the resistor kit on one and soon the second one also. I think its worth the $40-$50 of insurance. Its simple to install.

True dat! The problem is fixed in the 06's.

His signature says he has a 2004, but that doesn't mean he still has a 2004...

I have a 2004 that doesn't have lights, or a resistor kit and I'm still running the stock battery that came in it when I bought it July of 2003. I'm probably the exception to the rule, but I would probably try running it without the lights and see if you have a problem before you go out and buy a $50 resistor kit. But then again I'm a cheap ***! :D

I probably should add that I keep a battery tender Jr on mine after I park it. And that probably has something to do with the longevity of my battery.
