My 400ex was shifting fine when I was moving it into the garage to adjust valve clearance. I shifted it into 1st , and now I can't move the shifter at all. I can ride it in 1st, but I can't get the shifter to move at all. Not neutral, or 2nd or anything. It won't move, I have tried to shift while riding around so the gears were moving and still the shifter won't budge. Any ideas would be appreciated.

sounds to me as if the shifter arm is jammed or bent internally. the spring may have come off inside the motor.

but the first thing i could check, make sure your shifter is not bent into the case. it may sound dumb, but it could jsut be hitting the case not letting it move. happened to my buddy in a race.

So far no luck. I have tried adjusting the cable, riding it around and revving it up and trying to shift, still won't shift out of 1st. The shifter won't move up. I just don't know what could have happened, it was in gear when I put it up on a table to check the valves. I shifted it into neutral, checked the valves. Started it up and put it in 1st. All while it was on the table. Then it is suck in 1st and won't shift.

I'm not sure if it's possible, but could something have fallen into your motor while adjusting your valves and gotten caught in your tranny? I'm not sure if that could happen, but just throwing out a suggestion.

sounds to me like you have something jarred in the motor. seems a bit fishy.

Sounds to me like it's time for a transmission rebuild. Excact same discription of symptoms when my 2nd gear went. Shift fork is probably bent. I would stop riding it until you figure this out.
