when i first start my 400, it will make a ticking noise for about the first 30 seconds. i can give it some gas and it will stop. once it warms up i doesnt do this anymore. what would cause this to happen?

Hey look at me I'm giving engine advice.

It depends but everyones first thought is going to be you need to adjust your valves.

2nd - if not, Do you have a stage II cam? If so you will always have a little tick tick tick going on.

I don't need to worry about my engine though. Runs perfect.
:D thanks Steve

the ticking when you first start the 400ex is the decompression mechanism. it is completely normal. the only way you can avoid this is to upgrade cam shaft, upgraded cam shafts do not use the decompression mechanism

That ticking sound is the time bomb that's inside your motor. When it stops ticking "LOOK OUT, IT"S GONNA BLOW"

I agree.

I have seen this on 3 different 400ex's. All new out of the box. If your bike is new it is normal. I would worry about it enless your motor has a lot of time or you have done motor work.

I'd also agree it is the decompression mech. in fact mine was doing it and I was all worried and my brother in law, who is hard core 400ex racer said it was just that. He reached down adjusted the idle to a bit faster and badabing badaboom in 2 seconds it was gone and it has never come back!!!!
