just upgraded from 01' 300ex to 05' Z400 .well let me just start out by saying this thing was awesome when i first got on it down the streets.about 2 hours out we were riding through snow , muck , and mud when it finally hit me that i had no airbox lid on with a stock filter.at this point i figured id go home and call it a day till i can get a lid , while coming back down the mountain all of a sudden lost all power then stalled.it eventually fired back up and i limped it home to find the foam filter soaked.what are my options here ? put a lid on , do i have to rejet ? do i need to clean the carb now ? any suggestions ...

the bike apears to be stock w/low hours besides no airbox lid
WTB 05 Z400 airbox lid ...

You have to loosen the 4 bolts on top of the swingarm. They are torque down good . I use a pipe as a breaker to lossen them. There is another bolt on the end. Tight that until the chain is at the right tension. The tighten up the top 4 bolts.

If you pop the lid off you MUST rejet. Atleast the main jet. I"m running a 160 main and a 25 pilot and all is well.
I replaced the lid with a Outwears cover to keep out some of the bigger stuff and it also helps to keep from having to clean the filter so often. Here's what it looks like.

It depends on what elevation you are at on the jetting, sea level-maybe, 2500-probobly not. I have a 155 in one with a proflow, cams, open airbox at 2500 feet. I would guess that water was your problem. drain the carb, cleand the filter, and it should be fine

Thanks for the help guys.fired er up today , i borrowed a lid from a friend that had two vents on it which were duck taped closed , anyways the bike ran like cr@p , i pulled the tape off and ran it like that , it ran 100x better.

by the way where did you get the outerwears lid ?

I know K&N makes one. It's the one i'm running. IF you decide to put the lid back on the stock jet is a 130 and th airscrew is 2.25.

Search for a K&N power lid on ebay. I payed 65 for mine but they go as high as 100.

Also, if you know you are going riding in the water, remove the drain plug on the bottom of the air box so if you DO get water in there it can drain out & not be trapped for the air filter to suck in. Ray.

They are slightly different. There is a bolt hole in one but not the other. I don't remember exactly. Go to z400central. I know this question was answered there. I also believe there was a pic showing the difference.
