Round three of the GNCC series headed due north to scenic Morganton, North Carolina to the campground of "Steele Creek". Nestled in the mountains and bringing the racers back to typical XC style terrain, this round looked to set the stage for another epic battle in the Pro class as Bill Ballance is already out to a lead over hard charging Chris Borich. Borich's crew had discovered some power in their Curtis Sparks engine and wanted badly to get thier first win of 2007.

The weather looked to be almost perfect for the saturday event as the pits began to fill up friday afternoon. This round is one of the most scenic stops of the series as a beautiful stream cuts the facility in half giving incredible views of this part of the country.

The battle between the "Killer B's" is ongoing heading into round #3, with no less vigor then when we headed out of Georgia. Walking the pits friday evening I spotted John Rowlings busily giving Borich's race machine a good going over. A few simple questions revealed nothing new, plain old race prep and a bit of luck. The new found power in the Sparks engine could be exactly what was needed to take the sting out of one member of the "Killer B's"

Teams filled their respective spots along Pro row as the afternoon turned to evening.

William Yokely is eagerly awaiting his chance to get his Kawasaki backed KFX450 on the podium. His new colorful rig drew alot of attention from fans as he made his way down the long road to the pit area.

The registration line was long, but seemed to be moving well as I snapped a picture of veteran atv racer "Gump" patiently waiting in line.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 09:58 PM
I wandered the pits chatting and snapping pictures when I noticed the Tech line was off the hook!

Sound inspections are back, and will be performed on random classes each round with no prior notice to which class will be held to the AMA imposed 99 decible sound limit.

Pappy

The cool mountain air was refreshing as night claimed the valley. I decided to check on the hard working vendors and once again the boys at Maxxis were hard at it changing tires for racers.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:06 PM
The Elka techs were doing their thing well into the night, preparing shocks.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:07 PM
Installing a kill switch by flash light is not fun, but required for competition.

Geico insurance is now part of the scene at the GNCC's as they are on hand to provide you with all the information on insuring your atv or motorcycle. I figured they would make one race and see what we do to these machines and run away:p

The Geico lizard is a quad guy, atleast thats what I hear:o

Saturday gets right busy at a GNCC, with a 8 A.M. start time for the Youth race, followed immediatley by the Morning race, only to be wisked back to the line for the start of the main event, I was starting to feel the effects of running all over this facilty for 6 hours as I heard the engines rev following the national anthem. At a run I made it to the line just in time to catch the 10 seconds call.

The place fell silent for a brief moment, and with a flick of the green starter flag the pro class was fired to life and the 99db thunder bellowed it's music through the North Carolina country side!

Chris Borich was leading the pack to the first turn as Ballance and McGill stacked in behind him.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:28 PM
The weather was almost perfect at race time, but the field at the start was going to offer noone a break that did not happen to be out front.

Dust and shredded grass are all you could see as the Pro class headed for turn two!

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:30 PM
As I ducked the oncoming dust storm, I could hear one last quad come to life and heading out for 2 hours of brutality. Chris Jenks day was not starting out as he would have liked.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:47 PM
XC2 Pro AM was next off the line, and it was Donald Ockerman grabbing the holeshot with Brandon Sommers all over him as they head through turn one. Ockerman also pocketed himself $100 for the Atvriders.com holeshot award.

Jeff Miller #181 edges out Darrell Bozarth #033 for the holeshot in Vet A

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:55 PM
College A was led through the first turn by Jonathan E Shaff

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:56 PM
Not everyone goes through the first turn the same:p

Pappy
03-25-2007, 10:58 PM
Dave Simmons grabbed the holeshot in the Senior 40 class. Dave went on to take home second place.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:01 PM
Junior A 22+ class took to the track with Jonathan Long leading the charge.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:04 PM
Vet B came ripping into turn one with Scotty Ratliff hard on the gas, and he stayed that way! Scotty won the class!

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:07 PM
Ronnie Mills grabbed the holeshot in College B 16-21

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:08 PM
Close call, but thankfully he was fine.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:10 PM
Junior B 22+ was turned loose and it was Tyler Moore leading the way.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:15 PM
With the starting area cleared, everyone scattered to different spots along the track. I wanted to get to one of the man made bridges that cross the creek so off I went mingled in with fans and family, all chatting about the starts and who they thought would do well on todays course.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:16 PM
Crossing the bridge starts the journey on the "other side" of the race area, where hills are steep and mudholes can rut up badly as the race wears on.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:18 PM
Riders follow one another on the single track areas that run along the creek. There are sections that widen and these areas get busy in a hurry as passes are attempted.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:19 PM
The bridges make quick access to the other side, but it can be a gamble as the footing is rough and one could easily find themselves used as traction!

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:20 PM
I wanted to get shots from an area that no other photographer was willing to get into, the middle of the creek. Gary Belbeck(Popo) came past just as I settled into the knee deep water.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:22 PM
I could hear the leaders coming, and I could make out a glimpse here and there as they worked off the hillside dropping into the creek bottom. It was Bill Ballance a few quad lengths infront of Borich as they passed my position.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:23 PM
McGill was in third and only a few seconds back.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:24 PM
Bryan Cook was in 4th, and closing in on McGill

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:25 PM
Chris Bitthell was holding 5th as the Pro class continued to file past with just seconds seperating them.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:27 PM
Matt Smiley was in 11th and riding great, I was hoping he would have a solid race this round.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:28 PM
William Yokley was in 12th, but charging hard. When he figures out how to get the new 450 to fire fast, the "Killer B's" might have a green hornet to deal with!

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:30 PM
Brandon Sommers had already started dicing up the Pro class and heading to the front. This boy has talent to spare and it wouldnt surpise me to see him on the podium from the second row before the year is out.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:32 PM
Brent Sturdivant had his Ice Cube powered 450R screaming as he came to this section. I watch him race in a local series, and always pull for him at the GNCC races. It was good to see him come past me focused and moving up!

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:33 PM
Andy Lagzdins crosses the bridge and heads back into the woods charging after the leaders.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:36 PM
Jenks was faced with a bad start and he had to put in a solid ride if he wanted to get through this round with a decent finish.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:45 PM
Back in the pits, crews waited as word came in on how their rider was doing

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:48 PM
Nick Regalia switched to Junior B class this season and is finding there are major differences between the morning and afternoon events.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:53 PM
Bouncing between areas where I could try and stay ahead of the Pro's proved tough at this event. It did allow me time to find out I need a better mode of transportation besides my boots:p

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:54 PM
Back into the water as more riders came across another bridge. By the second lap riders started getting spread out as you can see in the background.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:55 PM
The famous bridge proved to be a flop for me this year as they constricted the track to one line out of the underpass.

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:57 PM
Running the creekbank and then across left no really good spot to get pictures without sinking my self into knee deep mud. Knee deep water was ok, but from the looks of the stuck riders on the far side I was content with what I had in this area:p

Pappy
03-25-2007, 11:58 PM
How's two wide on the bridge:eek2:

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:00 AM
Reports were coming in over the loud speaker as I crossed the pit area. Ballance was out front and then the radio fell silent. I picked a spot as I knew the leaders should be close when Bill Ballance popped out of no where! I have commented many times to folks that Bill can sneak up on me in the woods, and he proved me right again. I could hear those following him as they approached, but he is so smooth that his engine just mixes in with the normal sounds of the racing.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:04 AM
According to my film data, Borich was 3 seconds off Bill's grab bar at this point!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:05 AM
Just a few seconds back from Borich was Bryan Cook charging the corner. If the battling B's made a mistake, Cook was going to be right there to capitalize on it.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:07 AM
The Pro class was heading to pit row in force and still running fairly close. Mcgill had dropped back from 3rd to 5th

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:08 AM
Yokely had the green machine in the wind as he worked his way towards the front.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:10 AM
Brandon Ballance was doing good nearing the end of the 2nd lap, but mechanical issues put him out of the race.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:11 AM
Brandon Sommers was still on a mission as he passed me on lap two

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:13 AM
Bryan Baker heads to pit row on his Outlaw

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:15 AM
With 2 laps to go, I was back in the woods and couldnt hear the leader had changed, but I could tell that soon enough when the sound of Borichs exhaust told everyone that he was the man in charge!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:16 AM
Ballance was still close enough to chew on Borich's roost, and this thing isn't over until it's over.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:18 AM
How close is close? If i can get 1st thru 3rd in my lens then folks that is close! Cook had both of these guys in his sights and I can't help but think he was just waiting for them to get together and make a mistake that would allow him to roll right on by:cool:

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:22 AM
I worked my way to the finish area to see what everyone else wanted to see, who was going to come out of the woods and what was going to happen in the last set of turns leading to the checkered flag.

Joe Borich waits like the rest of us, ofcourse he does it with a bit more angst;)

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:23 AM
The entire section surrounding the finish line was packed, as everyone waited. How long till they are due in seemed to be question number one.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:26 AM
Finally, they came ripping into the field section and at each turn the crowd leaned further into the fencing trying to take in every piece of the action as they headed our way.

The last straight and a small ditch was all that stood between Borich and his first win of 2007. The ground was covered as Ballance trailed Borich into the last obstacle unchallenged, settling for second as chris took the checkers and put Steele Creek's #1 plaque on his wall!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 12:29 AM
The podium celebration was all standard fare for Chris and Bill, but the whopla for Bryan Cook was not going to go unnoticed by this North carolina resident and his army of supporters!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 01:58 PM
The morning race exposure is dominated by the Women's class, and rightfully so. The chance for companies to back the nations fastest women and grab exposure for them in what has always been considered a "mans" sport is and has been growing for several years. Traci Cecco and Stephanie Parton are household names in the atv world and have become the two riders with the biggest targets on their back at every race as the entire field behind them wants to beat them and get on the coveted podium.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:04 PM
Kristen Atwell was ready for her second GNCC event of the year. Kristen finished 11th at the Georgia round. The ballance brothers may battle it out in the Pro class, but the Atwell's get to handle the morning family fued when the green flag drops!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:09 PM
The Utility classes are stealing some of the ladies thunder this season, as series sponsor Can AM has an overwhelming presence at each event and has stocked the ranks with talented riders all looking to put the women racers and everyone else behind them.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:18 PM
Can Am's top gun in the 4x4 Open class is Rick Cecco, who has been riding extremely hard to get his Can AM upfront this season. Unfortunatley, it has been small issues that have kept him from the podium.

Other Can AM riders prepared themselves as the minutes ticked away before the start

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:23 PM
In the Super Senior class (50+) there is one name everyone knows and that is Polaris rider John Gallagher. This season had yet to see the cagey veteran with a class win and this round could offer him the course needed to allow him to pilot his Outlaw to the front and get back on top of his game.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:25 PM
With the starts covered by more photographers then a Paris Hilton press conference, I made my way to a section of course that would allow me to catch the riders as they entered the woods. A few old buildings in this area served as a great vantage point for a few spectators who clammerd atop them.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:29 PM
I was out of ear shot of the announcer, but there was no mistaking the roar as the Womans class came to life and worked to the first turn

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:33 PM
Traci Cecco was out front as the class hit the woods

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:35 PM
The women tend to be "slightly" more refined in their approach to the woods. With two hours of racing ahead of them, there is no need to end the day early by taking out the first tree they encounter!

Parton trails Cecco as the duo head off into the woods.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:37 PM
Jennifer Albright and Jennifer Fulkerson pictured here, running 4th and 5th into the woods

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:39 PM
Super senior 50+ rider James Coffing was out front early

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:40 PM
John Hines sets his Polaris in motion as the rest of Super Senior took to the track

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:45 PM
Rick Cecco was off to a fast start and looked like he wanted to seperate himself early from his class and hunt down the leaders for the overall!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:48 PM
Jamie Bougher was aboard his new Can AM and ready to break it in, wide open and bouncing off anything in its way!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:50 PM
U2 class was next to go and it was Micheal Benson making his Fourstroke Tech V-Force scream as he entered the woods on a mission!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:52 PM
Brock Parker was charging hard and looking to better his 3rd place finish at the last round.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:54 PM
4x4 limited's Micheal Swift has been the man in this class so far this season, recording 2 class wins and looking for more!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 02:56 PM
Mike Penland enters the woods and takes off after those ahead of him. When the conditions get bad, Penlad has a track record of getting things done and you can never count him out until the checkered flag comes out.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:02 PM
A few of the morning classes can get large, and when combined with the adrenaline that racing breeds can add up to major confusion when the first tight area of the day is encountered.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:03 PM
Mistakes happen, and usually it is cause for a few seconds of "Opps" and then everyone waits for the "next" thing to happen!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:04 PM
And when no one will lift, a turn can get wider...and wider..and wider

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:06 PM
Stalling in this situation can allow alot of riders to get by and check out on the rest of the class that will have to get around the inevitable bottleneck that follows

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:07 PM
Brandon Boso was off to a great start in Youth production

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:09 PM
getting a tow back to the pits after less then 1 minute of racing is enough to ruin anyones day

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:10 PM
When the leaders came back into view, Parton had the lead and was doing everything she could to put distance between her and 300+ other riders all trying to run her down

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:12 PM
Cecco ripped into the field section in 5th or 6th spot. Chatter around the pits had everyone speculating that a wreck had occured, but after the race Cecco and Parton explained that they both went off course as markers were missing and after getting turned around valuable time had been lost

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:13 PM
Rick Cecco emerged from the woods and was flat out moving! During the next few laps his name was being blared over the loud speakers and it looked like he may have a shot at an overall!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:15 PM
Traci rode hard and ran down Parton, passing her for the lead

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:16 PM
John Gallagher was moving up as the race wore on, shown here catching a breather as he crosses one of the bridges encountered on the course

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:17 PM
Rick Cecco wasnt catching anything except the wind hitting him as he was relentless in moving towards the leader.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:20 PM
Alot of the course along the creek rutted up as the moisture from the night turned to muck

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:22 PM
Knowing the race was nearing an end, i moved to an area where i could catch the leaders come in. there was a ditch just before the finish line that caused many riders to take one last hit before calling it a day

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:24 PM
Rick Cecco had made his way into a position to go after the overall as he checked in for lap 3. Unfortunatley, Rick ran into problems and had to pull his Can AM into the pits and was unable to resume the race

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:26 PM
Michael Shelley clears the last obstacle before securing his 2nd place finish in the U2 class behind class winner Micheal Benson

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:34 PM
John Gallagher had ridden well enough and hard enough to capture a spot on the podium. He came across the finish line and started off for his pit when he had to be called back so he could get his Outlaw on the podium!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:35 PM
With gallaghers 3rd spot taken, that made two Outlaws on the podium with Parton taking second. The Polaris camp was happy!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 03:39 PM
The victory would be Traci Cecco's as she walked out of north carolina with yet another class win and the overall! After the course marking issue, dropping back and then her charge to the front, this win would serve as even more coal in her fire to claim another Womens class championship. With 3 wins this season, she is looking hard to beat, but you can bet Parton will do everything she can to take all that away as the season rolls on!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:03 PM
The Youth race is not for folks that like to sleep in with a 8 a.m. start time. Usually around 6:45 am you can hear a youth quad fire up and is soon joined by others as the young riders ready themselves for the days battle.

Groggy eye'd parents slurp on coffee as they check over the rider and ride in the early morning light. The starting line usually has more then one youngin yawning and stretching as the days events get started.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:06 PM
Words of wisdom passed at each event, sometimes quiet praise and encouragement, and always a "be safe"

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:19 PM
Jesi Stracham and her sister Jodi on the line.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:22 PM
Austin Findley has been racing more then most of the morning class entries. He is a holy terror aboard a mini atv. Making teh switch to the 90 Mod class has not netted him the finishes he would have liked, but this young and talented rider has a super bright future ahead of him and more wins and championships are yet to come!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:23 PM
Matthew Harris stood tall on the podium at the last round, and I know I was going to keep a close eye on him at this event to see if he could pull out another victory.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:26 PM
If there was a beauty contest at the GNCC, Sadie Welch would be stomping the competition as she is the sweetest lil' gal you will ever see! Big bright eyes and a heart warming smile, even at the end of the race when it's all covered in mud!

Sadie would have her work cut out as the course would be demanding on these young riders.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:28 PM
Cody Hill was ready. We had worked out the kinks on the DRR and he was looking for a good solid race today.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:30 PM
As I walked to my spot for the starts, i couldnt help but notice Jesi with her head in her hands mentally preparing for the race that lay ahead. Georgia had been unkind to her as her Honda suffered mechanical problems leaving her to push it across the finish line after an hour of problems. She knew what she had to do to get back on track.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:32 PM
The green flag was dropped and it was Dylan Bradford charging to the first turn with a pack of hungry racers ready to run him down

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:34 PM
Michael Ferraro flipped at the start giving everyone a scare. He was set back upright and soon was slicing and dicing the field ahead of him.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:36 PM
Derec Robinson had the holeshot in 90 Mod 8-10 and never looked back. Derec had issues in the opening round, followed by a 5th place finish in Georgia so a win at Steele creek would be an awesome bonus for this fine young rider!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:39 PM
And after his crash at the start, coming back for the class win was the icing on the cake!!

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:42 PM
Cheyanne Shadron hammered to the first turn taking the holeshot in 90 Limited 11-15

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:43 PM
Chase Horton was off to a great start on his Cobra in the 90 Limited 8-10 class

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:44 PM
Brayden Shick leads out the 70 CVT class

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:46 PM
The minutes ticked away, and we all could hear the action high up on the hills surrounding us. Finally Dylan Bradford came ripping out of the woods heading to the scoring area to put the first lap in the books.

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:48 PM
Jesi Stracham was in 4th as she worked her Honda through the field section

Pappy
03-26-2007, 05:49 PM
90- Mod class was rolling as Cody Hill and Kyle Riley entered the fields

Pappy

Jerry Welch is plenty fast, and he did not have the finishes the first two rouds that he could have. This round he was right where he needed to be and riding like he needed to ride, shown here running 3rd

Hill was riding the DRR as hard as it could be riden.

"It sucked some water on lap 2 and it took what seemed like forever for the engine to clear out" said Hill

The leaders checked back in and there seemed to be a large break in teh action. Finally two main groups of riders all mixed together came in. I found out later that the race officials had been slowing the quads at a large downhill for safety reason causing a rolling bottleneck which resulted in an onslaught of action as soon as they broke free of the woods.

Nice pics! Moving up to the afternoon is definitely a new experience, but I think once my endurace comes back I will pick up the speed to turn in some decent results. I have a few weeks to get in some needed seat time and I'll see you all in SC.:)
