The 450R Axle works on a 400ex. All you need to do is change out the sprocket hub and use your original sprocket hub to your ex. IF you bend an ex axle this is a cheaper alternative to getting another 400ex axle. There are few on Ebay and a plethora of 450r's available on ebay. Now the 450r axle does have a wider bearing surface on the sprocket side because the 450r uses 3 bearings instead of 2 but that wider space is superfluous if you are going to use the 400ex carrier... Anyway... happy riding and fix those bent axles with 450r's

The 400ex carrier is 1/4in longer than a 450R axle, it will probably work at quick glance, but you will either have a problem with the chain wearing out your brake pads wearing out...I've done extensive research on this

Not a good idea IMO!:o

well have you done it. I haven't had any problems so far. When i had the sprocket hubs off, THe axles where exactly the same except for the 3rd bearing sleeve,... all spines, centerlines, lockring grooves, and bearing sleeves line up perfectly. NOTE i did try to use the 450r axle with the 450r sprocket hub and it was a no go.. After I put the 400ex axle hub on it everything was perfect.

I agree with 400exrider707.Put some hours on that thing and maybe even take it to the mx track a few times, then let us no how u made out for you

I've got a stock 450R axle laying around, and a 300ex that could use a new one. Should I attempt to switch out the hubs, or would I just be wasting my time?
Thanks.

The area where the carrier rides on the axle is different sizes. If yours are in fact the same you have two of the same axles, not a 400ex one and a 450R one. I tried making a 400ex durablue x-33 work in my 450R too many times. I tried it with the 450R carrier, a RAD 400ex carrier and even with the 400ex brake stay. The only way I could see it working was to use the 400ex carrier and machine 1/4in off of it, and then machine a custom brake stay, even then alignment would not be perfect. The axle would not sit centered in the carrier. Not a good idea. If you search this, I have pics posted of the two different carrier sizes.

You were trying to put a 400ex axle on a 450r... I AM DOING the reverse of that. It workes absolutely fine. Getting the sprocket hubs switched was the key. This was also the hardest part. I put it on a 10ton press and removed the retaining clips then pressed them off. I put the stock 400ex sprocket hub on the 450r axle. Then I installed the axled in the 400ex axle carrier, and used the 400ex brake stay, rotor, and everything else stock 400ex. There is a difference between the 450r axle and the 400ex axle. The 450r axle is about and 1.5 inches longer, and it has a wider bearing surface on the sprocket side to recieve that extra bearing. 450r's use 3 bearings rather than to in the *** end. I will get some pics up here next time i take it apart
thanks

I know that they use three bearings, but this is not what makes the carrier different sizes. The 450R uses the smaller carrier btw, so I dont see how you can say that the 450R bearing surface is larger. Putting the 400ex sprocket hub on shouldn't make a difference. The axle has two different size bearings surface areas, so no matter what you do, it will be off in one direction or the other, there is no way around it.

Honda does not reinvent the wheel on every bike... The widths of the swingarms without the bearing carriers in them are ALSO IDENTICAL...
thanks

I raced a whole season in 2005 with a RAD 400ex carrier and a RPM 400ex axle.

It worked and I did 2 season on the same brake pads and 2 chain/sprocket kits just like in 06 with a full 450r rear end.

If you looked at my original post, the 400ex RAD carrier does not have that flare on the sprocket side, and it still wouldn't fit.

Im not sure what to tell you... All i can say is that this 450R Axle is working fine on my 400ex.. no weird noises.. no brake or sprocket damage....

Im not saying its impossibe that yours does not work, however you have yet to show how it is working exactly. Maybe some pics of the two sprocket carriers side by side on the axle. I dont understand how you cant have alignement issues when the two carriers are different lengths, and the bearing surface on the axle is two different lengths.

If you look at the diagram that i drew, the 450R and the 400ex have the same distance to the outside edges of the bearing surfaces.. The spines for the spricket hub and the rotor hub are exactly the same distance apart. The Axles are identical other than the Sprocket side has more MEAT for a second bearing to ride on the bearing surface. THAT MEAT was added to the inside of the sprocket side bearing surface not to the outside... ALSO 450R and 400ex swingarms width measure the same without the carrier. All I can tell you is that I know that the sprocket hubs and the rotor hubs for between the two bikes are infact different and perhaps this is making the difference... All i am saying is that my 450R axle works on my 400ex and all i did was switch the sprocket hubs. I put the 400ex sprocket hub on the 450R axle and it works.

All I asked for was a picture, and Ill let it go. the diagram doesn't really prove anything to me, thanks.:macho
