I have a stock 01 Ex and i want to know it i go down a tooth on the front sprocket will it give me a lil more power on my bottom end? And if i did would my chain size be smaller as far as length?

Yes 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket "front" is like adding 3 on the rear so It would be geared lower so you would have more bottom end grunt but in return you will loose top end speed. You should just be able to adjust the chain to take up the extra slack but if it is already stretched then you will just need to take out a link. Hope this answers your question

thanx! I plan on getting new sprockets and a chain as well. I mainly do trail riding so i dont think it will hurt me by losing a lil on top end.

What year is the bike you are planning to do this too. the newer bikes are already geared lower and I tried a 13 up front and felt like I was riding a tractor and could hardly use first gear so I went back to the stock 14 but the older bikes had a 15 front I believe so the 14 helps a whole lot.

Then yeah you would greatly benifit from a change to the
countershaft sprocket go with a 14 tooth. You wont be disapointed.

many like the lower gearing on the 400ex. it is a cheap thing to do, considering a sprocket is only about $13-15. if you don't like it, it is simple to change and you are not out a lot of cash.

personally i tried it, and hated it. i trail ride mostly, with some MX thrown in there. it was geared way to low for how i ride, stock gearing is great for me, the didn't even last me a whole day before i went back to the 15.

yea you have a built motor though so that has a lot to do with it. You have enough motor to pull the higher gearing. he is running a completely stock bike

I have thought about a sprocket change but, I have a 2006, so my stock set up is 14/39. It runs great and suits my riding style perfectly.
