So whats the difference in running larger wheels compared to smaller ones?

Is there really any difference?

Pros, cons?

Thanks

well i can tell you that maxxis dont make the razr 2 for an 8" rim. which i have a set of 8" beadlocks. and now i want to buy a set of 9 or 10" beadlocks. if that helps.

Usually, the 10" wheel is popular for dune riding....simply becuase you will have less sidewall, which will help flatten your paddles out for a better bite in the sand

8" offer more sidewall which will help keep you from bending your wheel, but will have more "tire roll." than a 10.

The main difference is the amount of rubber.

With a smaller rim, you'll have more rubber, and more tire roll, BUT with a larger rim, you increase the chances of tagging the rim on rocks, stumps, etc. Because there is less rubber.

If your going to run 18" rear tires, you would want to run an 8" rim, 20" rear tires run a 9" rim, and if you go with 22" rims run a 10" rim......Thats the only way I would do it.

Also, I USUALLY go by the saying "Function over form", but in my opinion, any other combination other then what I listed, tends to look very out of preportion to me.

I've been hearing lately that 22" tires on 8" rims are better for dunes. Haven't found why yet... May depend on the bike and/or HP....

You can't get best of both worlds. It's one or the other or something inbetween.;)

So by tire roll you mean when you come into a turn the tire wants to "roll over" the rim?

Seems like CdaleRider has it figured out.

Thanks

i have read that this is when jumping in the dunes, that you want the tire to absorb more on the landing.

Another part is the added ground clearance....

I run a 20 inch tire on a 10 inch rim for mostly trail riding. It feels a lot better then the stock 20 on a 9 inch rim. Less side wall flex, but retains the stock diameter so that it doesn't throw off your gearing and still retain ground clearance.. I like this combo.
