in my 400ex 2001 i had the clutch adjsuted when i out on a all new gasket set. After i rode when i got it back i noticed it acted like 3rd gear was out when i was riding in 3rd. So is it a bad 3rd gear, bent shift fork, or something in the clutch compartment? When in 3rd it will be on the gas then it will act like its in neutra then go a lil bit then go back to neutral but in staying in third gear. Anyone got any ideas?

I think your clutch is slipping.

Sounds like a trans problem to me. Does the machine do anything unusual in 4th or 5th? If it doesn't, time to split the cases.

nope, it does fine in 4th and 5th. But if 3rd did go out wouldnt it take 2 or 4 with it?

No. Mine did the exact same thing, kicking in and out of 3rd gear. Every other gear worked fine--only 3rd was messed up.

how much did they cost you to have that replaced?

I did all the work myself, I also took advantage of having the cases split and installed the stroker crank as well.

I bought a complete second trans off E-bay for 135, the gasket set was about 115. Service Manual was 35 I believe through Service Honda.

If your mechanically inclined and have a good service manual, it's not that hard to fix.

how have those gears been holding up since you bought them?

Fine so far, almost a year without any problems, despite the extra power from the stroker.

Yep same thing happened to me as well. Now I have a hotrods stroker crank sitting in the garage waiting for me to find a good deal on a used tranny on E-bay.

splitting the cases is a pretty major deal if you don't know what you are doing.
Having it done will run you $400 easily, depending on what is found once cases split.
