That is truely one of my favorite bikes on this forum. It looks sick man. I love the tires and wheels. That bike must have cost you a fortune. Mine is more of a work in progress because it takes the back seat most of the time to a CRF450R that gets most of the attention. I will try to post up some pics of the quad later today. I cant wait to get those nerfs on there I think that will really set it up nicely.

I have to give "speedyquad" the credit on this idea. He planted the thought in my head and I went with it.

The Klaws are awesome! I've got them set up for loose dirt right now. I have the 6 ply XCR rear tires and 4 ply XCF front tires. I've seen no tread wear since I've had them on and no leaks. I love them.
www.rockymountainatv.com carries them for less than $50.00 a tire and free shipping if you spend over $99.00.

Very nice 400ex dude, I've not seen many after the redesigned plastics that i like, but yours is in the top 5 that I've seen.

The wheel/tire combo looks awesome, i was pondering those tires myself. And I really like how it sounds with that slip on, almost makes me want to get one myself...

Do you happen to have a side profile picture, just like the first one, but with the trail tech clamps/bars installed? I am trying to decide if my steering stem is bent or not. I just installed my Trail Tech clamp kit/bars & the plactic key/light relocator rubs against the plastic above the gas tank. I just can't tell if that is normal or not. Thanks if you do have a picture.

I ride it hard, trust me. It runs better than it looks. I have flipped it once. That's why it has new Steering stem, bars, grips and dashboard.

I don't have a picture like you're requesting but, I went out and took a look at mine. When the bars are straight, there is a 3/8" gap between the bar plastic and tank plastic. When I turn the bars to full left or right, there's a 1/16" gap between them. They never make contact.
A couple of months ago I flipped my quad and had to replace the steering stem and a few other things as well because they got bent. It had bent back far enough for contact to be made. I ended up replacing the tank plastic too.

Is it expensive to replace the steering stem? That is what happened to me. I wrecked a couple of weekends ago at the dunes. It was a pretty good tumble for my four wheeler. It bent my bars & it looks as if my stem is bent also.

hornetgod13
03-22-2007, 12:03 AM
You'll know for certain if you bent it when you remove it. It's sopposed to be completely straight. Mine bent up towards the top just above the upper pivot point where the plastic greased bushing is that hold the upper portion of the stem.
You can buy a used one on here or Ebay for $20.00 to $30.00 plus shipping. I bought a new one for $48.99. http://www.planethondaracing.com/cgi-bin/hondaparts/results_parts_details?mv_session_id=sGJhjpiC&mv_pc=209&se=pg_d_id%3d669%20and%20pg_my_id%3d130
You might even choose to buy an aftermarket stem but, they are considerably more expensive.

I have seriously considered that but, I can come up with too many reasons not to do it. Time, Money, Break Down, Rebuild, and lost riding time. Just not worth it to me.

This is how I get my quad around. It's a 6x10 foot trailer. I originally purchased it for $930.00 which included the spare tire and loading gate. I added some lights, tie downs, tongue box, and clear coated the wood deck.

No pick up truck for me. I drive a 2006 Ford Explorer XLT. It's fully loaded with a 4.6L V8 engine. 292 horse power is plenty enough to tow around the trailer and my toys.

Increases air flow significantly. The EHS Racing Lid provides plenty of filtered air to the engine. Much better than stock and much cleaner than running with the air box lid off.

Right around $2,500.00, give or take a couple hundred dollars. I would like to upgrade the suspension but, my wife has reached her limits on complying with my obsession to constantly upgrade my quad. I might chill out for a while. I would eventually like to break it down and black powder coat the frame.

how do you like your HMF with the quietcore? I was thinking about buying one but somoene told me you lose significant power with the quietcore. Also, where did you get the "remove before flight" exaust plug? thats so sweet

hornetgod13
04-18-2007, 05:27 PM
I love the exhaust. With out the quiet core it's fairly load. I have the quiet core installed and didn't notice any power loss and no rejetting was required. The quiet core can be removed or reinstalled in just a couple minutes.
The "Remove before Flight" exhaust plug is a FMF Wash Plug and cost $4.95 Below is a link to buy one.

How do you like the trail tech speedometer. Was it hard to hook up?

hornetgod13
06-24-2007, 12:18 PM
The Endurance model can be purchased for $65 to $75. It includes the stock handle bar mounting equipment. Installation takes less than 15 to 20 minutes. You will need basic hand tools and a drill with a 1/8" bit. You pull the front right tire and replace one of the stock brake rotor bolts with a magnetic bolt that is included with the kit. The drill/drill bit are required to drill a hole in the knuckle assembly to mount and secure the sensor. The sensor cable is routed up to the bars by zip-tying it to the brake line.
I'm glad I've got it. I like knowing how fast I'am going and how far I've riden. It's also excellent for tracking maintenance intervals like valve adjustments and oil changes.

looks good. here's a question for you that I have been wondering. Notice any power loss spinning beadlocks over a conventional rolled-edge rim? I know hipers are the lightest beadlock and by far the strongest imo. And look the best also. Just curious if you can tell you are spinning a heavier wheel or not? Just somethin i've been pondering for a while.

You are correct about the Hipers being the lightest beadlock available for quads. They are however, heavier than conventional rims. I personally can't tell the difference. I'm a trail/cross country rider, I seldom run on tracks. I like to run lower tire pressures and bought them for the look and durability.

I had a set of klaws/gnarly's on my EX they are great tires, but you have next to zero wear on them, how do know how great those tires are? Look on page 5 of this thread and you'll see a picture of it all muddy. It's been flipped twice. I've even had to replace the handle bars and steering stem. Page 7 has a photo of me actually riding. It comes off the trailer and I do ride it hard.
The klaw tires are awesome. I've been running them now for over 6 months and the tread wear is fantastic.

seriously, unless you just have a bottemless wallet, why would you get a 400, dump all the money in it, then a 440 kit, when you could just have bought a 450 or even now the 525, which would be up to par or better stock than the 400 right now..

Ya a 440 or a nice 416 with the hotcam and stuff would be great for trail riding I think. But I guess its all what you would like LOL. I am hopefully after high school gonna build a nice 416ex with a Houser/PEP or TCS suspension.

Because A LOT of people have 450's. The 400 is a nice reliable quad. Not saying that the 450 isn't but some people want something dfferent. I personally don't want a 450 because I will just end up dumping a crap load of money in it anyways so I could care less about a 450:)

I'm a trail rider not, a MX racer. A 450 wouldn't suit my riding style. I'm happy with my 400EX and don't plan to get a 450.

Exactly a 400ex is plenty quick enough for trails and is a great all around quad.

i got the 400 because of price reverse and electric start. I could have gtten the 450 but i knew whatever i got i was going to mod it anyway. thats just how i am. pay less and mod or pay more and mod. plus i weigh in at a whopping 136 punds soaking wet so the front end on the 400 comes up on its own. its no ktm but its perfect for me.

Well said! I feel the same way. Reverse and electric start were two of the selling points for me too. I've had mine over a year and a half now and couldn't be happier.

There are 2 basic types. Honda's use the 10mm Diameter x 1.25mm Thread Pitch, Single Bleed type. You can order it here.

I'm heading out to Glamis, California next week so, I thought it was a great opportunity to buy a new set of tires and rims for the trip. Here's a picture of the front and rear ITP .190 T-9 Black Pro Series rims and ITP Sand Star tires.
The rims sizes are 9x8 (3+5 off set) and 10x5 (3+2 off set)
Tire sizes are 20x11-9 and 21x7-10

To all those who say he should have bought a 450 instead of dumping money into a 400ex. I say no way.
I sold my beloved 400ex to buy a 450r and have had regrets ever since. I raced my 400 and thought I needed more power so I took the loss and sold it to find out that I didn't need more power.
I am no faster on my 450, and have never felt as comfortable as I was on the 400.
Yes the 450's are faster but only If you will use it.

How are the DMP graphics working for ya? Thinking about getting some for mine. They're the only good looking graphics for '05 or newer (that I know of, anyway). Did you get them off of ebay?

Also, are your x-bars close to stock feel? Have a trail tech mounted with the crappy plastic piece they give you. I have stock bars now and like the feel, but I feel the need for some taperwall bars. I was thinking I should just get the clamp and mount for the computer and get the x-bars while I'm at it. Just trying to get the feel of all of it close to stock setup (rise, sweep, etc.).

The DMP graphics have been on my quad or over a year and a half now and I couldn't be happier. They still look great and the seat cover is holding up too.

I have medium bend trail tech X-Bars and they feel exactally like the stock bars they replaced. They're strong too, they've survived a tumble down a hill and I ended up only having to replace the steering stem.

I got my rims from Matt at Highland Tires. The rims were $730.00 SHIPPED with a 3+6 rear and 3+2 front off set. If you go 4+5 off set than you can get them for $660.00. His e-mail address is zhighlands@aol.com and number is (717) 226 6022. I got the rims for that price nearly a year ago so they might have gone up a bit in cost but, I shopped around and Matt had the best price I could find. I even bought 4 mud plugs to go with them for only $80.00

You need to cut/grind off the spacing tab that's on the thumb throttle housing between it and the brake lever mounting assembly. The PowerMadd Hand Guards mounts between them. Also if that's not the problem, mount the brackets going OVER the brake lever, not below it. Here's a picture from the top.

Things I'm waiting on to get it put back together.
1.) Wiseco 87mm (416cc) 11:1 Hi-Compression Piston Kit (Ordered)
2.) Bore Cylinder (once piston arrives)
3.) Install XR400 Head Gasket (thinner than stock)
4.) Hotcams Stage 1 Cam Shaft

Stuff completed while quad was torn down
1.) CRF450 Cam Chain
2.) EBC DRC HD Clutch Kit
3.) iShocks i5500 Front Suspension Kit
4.) Rebuilt, Tuned, and Resprung Stock Rear Shock (iShocks)
5.) Steel Braided Rear Brake Line to Match Front Brakes
6.) Durablue +2 +4 Eliminator Axle
7.) Anodized Black Rad-Loc Axle Nut
8.) All Balls Rear Axle Bears and Seals
9.) Gibson 7 Way adjustable Steering Stabilizor
10.) Black Powder Coated Tinner Scoops
11.) New Viton Valve Seals
12.) Rejetted: 42K Pilot, 165K Main, and Needle Clip 4th Slot Down

Pretty expensive upgrades but, I expect it to ride like a new quad. I'll take more pictures once it's all back together. Once the piston arrives it should be back together and on the trails/track in less than 5 days.

The Ishock set up looks surprisingly good. How much did it set you back?

Curious, how come you did not send the rear shock to GTT, or C&D?

I'm sure it will handle like a whole new quad. Done spending money on it for a while? hah, you're wife must be pissed.

hornetgod13
01-19-2008, 04:42 AM
The suspension kit was $1,850. I sent the rear shock into iShock because it was only $199 plus $80 if it needed a new spring. They also guarantee all thier work and will redo the tuning until your happy and won't recharge for sending it back.

I'm done for a while now. This lastest round of improvements cost me $3,287. I'm out of money and the Wife would be none too pleased if she only knew how much I've got invested in this quad ($11,848). She's visiting her family for a couple weeks so I'm trying to get it all done before she gets back.

I got my 87mm (416cc) 11:1 Wiseco Piston in the mail today. I need to take it and the cylinder to get bored and honed. If all goes well, the quad could be back together Saturday or Sunday.
Since I'm going all out on upgrading the suspension, I figured it would be wise to get a steering stabilizer too. After looking around and reading multiple threads on the topic, I decided to go with a Gibson 7 way rebuildable steering dampner. Gibson is one of the best in the business. It cost $159.00 (Ebay) and the installation was pretty straight forward. It has a total of 7 settings of dampning. After adjusting it and cycling the bars back and forth I think I'll start out on 3 or 4 and see how it rides. It's really sopposed to minimize arm pump and rapid bar jerking when you hit obsticles or rough terrain. Once I get the whole quad back together, I'll take it out and give it a thorough testing. Here's a picture of it installed.

Put the motor back together today. I had been waiting on the cylinder to get bored and honed. It was the last thing I was waiting on. I was a little nervous seeing my quad all broken down into small pieces for the last couple weeks. I was beginning to wonder if it would ever ride it again.

Once I got it all back together I was eager to fire it up. The battery was a low and it was sluggish to turn over but, it fired right up with in a couple seconds. It sounds good and strong. I didn't run it long because I still have to break in the piston and hotcam and the garage is not the best place to do that.

Unfortunately the weather isn't all that great right now so it will proabably be another week before I can get out and really test every thing out.

Pappy is powder coating them Gloss Black for me right now. Once they arrive I will take a picture and measurements for you.

Another option is you can e-mail Jim at Jimandcherix2@aol.com He's is maker of the famous "Tinner" scoops. They come in 1999 to 2004 and 2005 to 2007 versions. The 2005 to 2007 Tinner Scoops have the hole for the front plastic support to go through.

I took some advice of another EXRiders member and ground down the header welds on my stock pipe. It actually opened them up a full 1/8th of an inch which is a 11.2% increase in flow area.

It took less than an hour to do from start to finish. All I need was basic hand tools and a dremel tool with assorted tips.

Here's a picture of one pipe complete and the other with the stock weld.

Honestly, do you think I would widen the front and not the back as well. Come on!

It has an aftermarket axle already. Based on your "LOL" and  I'm guessing you think I widened the front and not the rear. I went +2 on the rear axle. That picture must be deceiving. The quad measures 50" in the rear and 48 7/8" in the front. Here's a picture of the +2 +4 DuraBlue Axle.

I took it out today. The pictures above were taken after I cleaned it up. Below is a picture right off the trailer once we got home.

The quad is much more stable and I feel a lot less roll over in fast turns. The front and rear suspension are so smooth. On jumps I land as smooth as a butterfly with sore feet. The steering stabilizer was pretty neat too. It does help with arm fatigue.

The best thing by far was the 416cc 11:1 Piston and Stage 1 Hotcam. The quad hauls @$$. It didn't add much to the top end but, the low end and mid range power, torque, and acceleration were enough to make my neck hurt after a while. I can't help but feel like I bought an entirely different quad. This thing is awesome!

I doubt I will go 440cc for a long while. After I wear this piston and cylinder bore out I will jump up to a 426cc with HD cylinder studs and than eventually a 440cc.

I'm totally happy with the 416cc Hi Comp Piston and Stage 1 HotCam set up. It feels like I dropped a whole new motor in it. My smile is already atleast 5 horsepower bigger.

I got them from www.metalmasterfabrication.com for 44.95. They came powder coated black and I added the Honda Racing sticker myself. The polished version are a little more. They also sell them on Ebay. With the new shocks I sold those and I'm getting a set of Tinner Scoops Powder Coated right now.

So you got that Ishock rear shock revalve/build back? How's that performing for you compared to stock and are you happy with it? Because from what i remember it was a good price for the rebuild.

And i agree, a red frame with a gusset kit would make the whole bike 'complete'. Of course, the wife might not agree :)

hornetgod13

If I ever do powder coat the frame it will be black. It's not a priority now.

The iShock tuned rear shock has been installed for a while now. They revalved it and put a slightly stiffer spring on it. I'm happy with it.

Received my Terry Cable dual gasser today. Installed it in around and hour which included modifying the PowerMadd mounting bracket and installing a new grip.

I took it out and test drove it and I have to say it's one of my favorite mods. The 1/4 twist throttle takes a little bit to get used to but, it's great to be able to use either your thumb or twist throttle. I paid $119.00 off Ebay.
