my 04 does the same...it's also stock. I have to crank it for like 20 sec to get it to fire once...then another 10 sec to get it to fire a second time...then after another 5 sec it will finally fire and stay running...is this just a fuel problem?

You might want to try a 40 pilot and set the pilot screw at 2 1/4 for starters. when you do this and use the choke just tap the throttle once or twice to get a little fuel in. Then turn it over and just give it enough throttle to stay running till warm. Also not to sound like a @#$% but, did you put a new plug in?

How old is your gas? Try draining all of your gas, taking off your carb and cleaning it, and putting in a new spark plug. Try a bigger pilot as well and seeing if that solves your problem.

Thanks
This thing has less then 20 hours on it.
I'll take it to the shop and have them look it over.

Dont waste your money and time......the 400's are naturally cold natured. Is the quad piped or is the air box lid off......try putting a 42 pilot jet in. Have you ever had the valve lash checked....do you know how to do it yourself?

Take my suggestion and pismo's. I own a shop and you don't need to go to a shop for a simple jet change. It takes about 1 hour your first time then as you get comfortable with it you will be able to do it in about 15 min. like I said though, start with the 40 if you are stock and work up from there.

If its flooding, don't dat mean its getting too rich a mixture?

Not always, Could mean that he is hitting the throttle to much to try to start it and the ap is pushing too much in. If he starts at a 40 and adjusts the fuel screw he will be fine. I had the same exact problem on my 06 and this is how I fixed it. I know run a 42 and 2 1/4 turns but, I don't think he will need the 42.

the problem is when not warm, it is not getting enough gas while just idling, but too much gas when given throttle. the larger pilot jet will allow it to idle without the use of throttle...

i would not recommend putting a 40 or 42 pilot ina stock 400ex. that will just make it run waayyy to rich off the bottom. my quad is stock motor wise as well and i have never had to hit the starter more than about 3 seconds for it to fire.

there is a choke for a reason. unless it is colder than 15 degrees out i have never had to use full choke. use half choke (the first "click" you feel when you put the choke on), and i pump the gas a little when i hit the button...then once it is running, run it on about 1/2 choke for like 3 minutes with the throttle at about 1/4 throttle. that is how i do it and i have never had any issues starting my quad

the choke on a 4ooEX is pretty much worthless if you are not getting a good mixture to begin with.If you want to sit and manually idle it you can but, I changed because it gets annoying and I was tired of going through plugs. Once you change it you shouldn't foul any more plugs.
