When I rev the ol' 400 it makes a whirling sound, is this normal??? I have the air-box lid, could it be in there??? I know I need the valves adjusted, because it is makeing a ticking sound, but could it also make the whirling sound???

Thanx:)

Thanx you guys, I appreciate it... Maybe you can answer another question for me, a mechanic priced me $50 to adjust my valves... I thought it was a bit pricey, but is that a good deal or not... I know a guy who will charge me $20 to do it, but he isnt a proven mechanic that has his own shop either, he does it in his back-yard actually...

Thanx again
Matt

The whirling sound is the oil pump at work. Every 400ex I have ever seen makes the noise.

if you have any mechanical skills, you can adjust them yourself. all the instructions you need are under ex tech at the top of the page. you'll save yourself $$, and have a little personal satitisfaction if you do it yourself.

Flaneled, take the $ you were gonna pay the mechanic and buy a maintenance manual. This won't be the last time you have to adjust the valves. I do everything myself and everytime I do something new, I buy a new tool. Now I got a garage full of tools! :D

speakin of turbos i rode a raptor wit a hks turbo bored to a 770 and i was speachless when i rode it. the starter clutch bearing sounded like **** when u killed it. but this thing had like 18 grand in the thing including the quad. it almost had too much power unless u were on a road or in the dunes. i never thought i would say somthin had too much power:(
