From a performance point of view aluminum is better, but from a weekend warrior point of view steel is better. Aluminum will last a long time if one keeps it adjusted properly. A steel sprocket will respond better to lack of chain slack maintence. Remember to change the front sprocket and chain too.

Aluminum is lighter so it will take less HP to turn it than a steel. For the average rider that is neglible but for the racer where every ounce matters, hence the aluminum. Aluminum is also softer than steel so it will also wear quicker. That's a generalization of the two metals.

Steel is the only one for me unless you have $200 to spend on a sidewinder.
