ive been having a dilema...i have my license(well the courts do for now cuz of my quad)and im gonna be getting a car,i was mostly lookin at camaros.but i just wanted to see what all you would choose between a stick and auto....i want stick but it seems like itll be a hassle once i get into town over here cuz of how much you have to stop then go....

so any input to get me favoring one side more would be great

I personally rather an auto because I travel a whole lot, but if I didn't travel a whole lot I would defiantly get a stick...
Also if you do a whole lot of town driving with stop lights every 100 feet and heavy traffic I would get an auto, but if you drive in small towns with not alot of traffic get a stick...

I have an 04 F150(Auto) & a beater 96 Protege that I drive primarily. The Prot. is a stick. I always love driving the truck, no work. In my opinion a stick is no fun unless you have a car worth having a stick. The protege has 95hp, so its more of a pain to stop and go. But if you are getting a Camero, a stick could be a fun thing. Like someone above said, it never hurts to be able to drive a manual. I know it has saved me on a few nights with some overly intoxicated friend's cars.

It pays to know how to drive a stick.

Personally, I prefer stick for anything sporty, and a Camaro definitely fits that description. If it's fun to drive, I want to be as involved in the driving experience as possible.

But for a truck, or any "luxury"-type car, an automatic is the way to go.

mephyst
03-18-2007, 07:49 PM
I agree with wilkin.

If it is a sporty type car, I would get a stick, but anything else I would get an auto.

As for chicks thinking it's cool that you can drive a stick, that only lasts until you are 17, at the most.

I prefer an auto (I don't really have a choice) because I have a Suburban, but auto is the way to go for cruising around with a bunch of friends and chicks in the car. It's not like stick is hard to drive or anything, but if you knew how bad traffic got in Southern California you would loose your mind after awhile.

Auto = no hassle, and if you ever need anyone to drive your car you know you don't have to worry about if they know how to drive stick well or not...

If its a Z28 or something get a stick....Just not the same without a stick.

My truck is a auto. I like auto cuz I can drink my water, eat food, talk on the cell phone or what not and not have to worry about anything.

My GEO was a stick it was fun but it was my Daily driver. It to be a pain in the arse when I was trying to talk on the cell phone and shift and stuff.

IMO if its a Daily driver go auto

If its a weekend car go stick

yea it would be my daily driver...

i live out in the country so its not that bad unlesss i wanna go to the mall or get some food then i have to go through town...

and ive never drove stick before but it doesnt seem that hard and it looks like itd be fun on as long as your not in traffic

Stick.

You drive a stick your cool.

And DON'T even WHINE to me about drivein threw a couple stop lights, I got a 85 5.0 Mustang 5-speed, that means its a stick, and I was drivin in St. Louis rush hour about every day, so don't be complain!

And when you got girls in your car, in my truck is a bench seat, I get the hottest chick to sit in the middle then you know where my hands are every time I grab 2nd, 4th, and reverse.   Yeh...............its Awsome!

And I've been drivin a stick since I was 9, I don't even think about it, I just get in the car/truck and go, its 2nd nature to me.

I shift without the clutch a lot to, so its less work, if you want, there's a way to do it though so its safe, and I can't really explain it.

And I drift ALL OF THE TIME, a STICK is the way to go, pop the clutch swing her around, in a turn tap the clutch to get her sideways, trust me I'm a pro and you can't do it with an auto like you can with a stick. With a stick you feel the power too, and a stick IS faster.

Get a stick and be cool!

I have noticed manuals are better on gas, insurance is cheaper, the car itself is cheaper and there is a less chance of it getting stolen. (I read a magazine saying something like 95% or stolen cars were autos)
But driving them in stop go traffic for more that 5 minutes blows. I think you have more control over your car when its a Manuel, this is y all my cars have been manuals. If you can drive a manual right it will last a lot longer than an auto.

Its easier to peel out with a stick and get power if you need it because all you have to do is gas it and pop the clutch like a quad. I think it helps you shift better on a quad too because you are always shifting everyday. But yeah it really depends on how much stopping and going you do. Sticks are also better because transmissions last longer than automatics.:)

LOL. SooOoOOOooo cool.

Yeah, while you are so cool putting your hands where *we know where* with your little stick I am getting *you know what* while driving in my auto... Hahahaha.

Having a stick really isn't that big of a deal even in traffic and what not, but if it's not a fast car there really is no point in having a stick.

Sticks do get better gas mileage (not by much), but only IF you drive it like an old grandma on the way to Sunday mass. Most people, especially in a sports car with a stick aren't going to drive like this, especially if they are young.

i don't care what it is and i don't care how many times you have to stop and go, if you know how to clutch properly then you shouldn't be burning up clutches unless you are running a huge amount of power, i'm lookign at gettign a truck here in the next few months and i'm not even going to look for an auto, nothing beats riping through the gears with a standard transmission.

WOW....Why does everyone have to have the baddest car for a first car...? Dude...it doesn't matter how fast it goes, what are you doing with it? Racing 24/7 on highways a month after you are able to drive? Who cares how much a stick impresses someone or how fast it goes. Almost everyone I know (actually everyone I know) has hit something with their first car...whether it was a small fender scraper or a full on wreck. Sometimes it isn't even their fault...crap happens. That camaro is going to look like junk if it's (1)your first car, (2)you're new to driving, and (3)you are learning stick. Everytime I read some young kid's posts about wanting a new car, it's something like a camaro or mustang blah blah. Then they say they will drive carefully, yea right...camaros weren't built to be driven carefully. I would just get a cheap car that won't matter if it gets beat up so you learn to drive better. I don't know why everyone has to have a fast car as a first car...there is no need to go fast.

Exactly...what's the point. Driving fast is illegal and dangerous, especially to a new driver. Driving slow defeats the purpose of owning a camaro. Why not just get a car and go where you need to go. That includes you Mr. Pro Drifter. I don't ever remember reading in the DMV book that you need a 4 banger, an e-brake, and drifting skill to be a good driver.

and a stick IS faster.
Not really, a lot of people prefer autos to drag race since they can shift quickly. Sticks are not always faster.

Get a standard, for sure.

Standard tranny's tend to be much more durable then autos....at least in any case i've dealt with.

With a stick, YOU are in control of the power in any situation. YOU choose the gear you are in for anything from accelerating to cornering to towing to hillclimbs. I personally hate automatics

03-19-2007, 04:38 AM
let me say this....my truck is a stick and i used to love it..but ia m ready for an auto

town sucks any more, especially when you get behind that car that is going a little too fast for first gear, but you can't keep the rpms up enough for second...and if you have to follow that same car home for 7 miles keeping the speed "in between" gears really sucks...this usually happens to me when i work night and get behind a line of traffic with the first vehicle being a school bus making a bunch of stops

Stick is definitely fun to drive but a lot of auto trannies shift so fast now that they are actually faster in a straight line. Especially some turbo vehicles. Any turbo diesel truck with an auto will be faster because your turbo stays spooled the whole time... Also not always is a manual cheaper than an auto. Most super duty trucks you have to pay substantially more to get a manual.

In my eyes automatic transmissions are crap.

I have yet to have an auto trans last more than 45K without problems. I know GM Hydromatic trans are notorious for valve body problems. Once they start to shift hard (too late to fix) its all down hill from there. All the metal shavings get dispersed throughout the trans and wreck havoc on the clutches, bands, bearings etc...

They cost 2-3 times more than a standard to rebuild because of all the pumps, valves, clutches etc. Any backyard mechanic could rebuild a standard, not so with an automatic.

Gas mileage is around 5% better with a standard.

In my eyes autos are a power sucking parasite.

Another thing to think about is...its harder to learn to drive a standard if you didnt learn to drive on a standard.

Just my 2 cents

there is a kid in my development, he had to buy the baddest car he could. It was real nice in the beginning, its a sports car(don't know what type) and a stick shift. Everytime I see if, it has a new dent on it, last time I saw it, it was getting to a auto body shop.......on a flatbed. The kid got this car when he was 16, drove it with his permit, it lasted about 1 year, I haven't seen the car in months already. Does this tell you enough?? He destroyed this car. Sticks are fun to drive, but they really suck in traffic, I should know, I drove one for about 3 years and still do sometimes.

Do yourself a big favor, quit trying to look cool, it only lasts so long and then you look stupid. For your first car, buy a used auto tranny honda civil, accord, toyota, chezy cavalier or something along those lines, maybe small pickup truck. It will be cheap and insurance will be cheap. Drive it for about 2-3 years, then step up to the plate and get a real vehicle. I will almost guarntee you that it won't be a sports car, might be a stick shift, probably more in the lines of a suv(or vehicle with enough power to pull a trailer), or pickup truck. Since you are on this site, it would be safe to say that you dirtbike(s) and/ or atv(s). Do you really want to haul your bike(s) on a trailer attached to your sports car? ride all day and get dirty, even if you change your clothes your car will still get dirty, from your gear? If you were to buy a vehicle, wouldn't you want it to be be able to haul your toys w/o worry??? I have 2 trucks, both are used for hauling my toys and not many other people get moved in them also. You may have alot of friends now that you have to impress, that fades in the years after high school and you end up with a max of ~5 people you can call friends and if they are true friends they don't care what you drive.

I know what you are going through, I was 16/17 once also. My parents gave me a ford escort, I drove it for ~2 years, then got ford ranger , drove that for ~7 years(in which the motor went). I bought a cheap isuzu pickup to haul my bike to the track, me to work and local places. About 4 months later my dad gave me his pickup truck. Yes, my friends/co-workers busted my chops bad when I only had the isuzu, but the comment after that was it got me/bikes, tools, etc, to work and the track and who really cares what it looks like. I learned early in life to not care what people think and do what makes things work for you and your needs.

Hate to break it to you, the first 3 years you drive, you are new to driving. When you can say you aren't new to driving is when, you have drove on highways, small roads, meduim sized roads w/ heavy traffic, in the city, in heavy rain, snow, sleat, haling trailers, all sizes of car/trucks. Then you can say you aren't new to driving. I have driven in all those situations, drove big trucks for about 5 years, I now own a good size truck of my own along with my small pickup. However, everyonce in awhile, when driving, there is a new situation. Driving is more than gas, steering, brake and so on. You have to think alot, look in your mirrors, judge turns on roads, avoid pott holes and obsticles and the major expeirence comes from driving alot....predicting what a car infront/behind/ to the side/etc looks like they are gonna do.

If you want to become a good driver, do yourself a favor, after you get your license, take a defensive driving course. Then afterward, go and get your motorcylce permit, take one of those courses that does the schooling, practice riding, and motorcycle test, you will learn alot about general driving, more advanced into predicting what others are/look like are gonna do, defensive driving. No matter what you/anybody thinks, you will have atleast one accident. You have alot of learning to do. I have been driving ~12 years and riding motorcycles ~5 years and there is still more to learn and new situations.

I don't see how having a stick allows you to have all these advantages to driving. These kids on here telling you to get a stick to look cool are retarded. They probably roll around with their friends and see a group of girls at a stoplight and push in the clutch and rev their engine 500 times while everyone else looks at them laughing.

I have a ranger that I just use for riding and it is stick... I drive my suburban everywhere else and I love the luxury of an automatic. Whoever said they have never seen a car go more than 45k miles with an auto trans is a moron... think about it, is that really true? No.

Driving is not cool... you will think it is for about a month until you realize that you have so many responsibilities. It is a privilege to drive. Driving in the USA is a necessity now days, and there are huge consequences if you F up. I personally don't even like driving anymore... I'd rather have a friend drive that way I can't get into any trouble if something goes wrong... The only time I actually enjoy driving is between 1-5am when you have the highways to yourself... It actually relaxes me... and no, I don't ever drive when I'm tired and delirious.

definatally a stick, take advantage of the power u have.

I just got a 3.0 ranger w/ auto and i swear it has less power than my ranger with a 2.3 and 5spd........

I don't think he was directing that completely on you. And I completely agree with him. When kids say "I've been driving since I was 10" No, they haven't. Maybe around the backyard like he said, or moving a car into the garage with their parents watching them like hawks (I hope) But that doesn't give you any experience on the road.

And being that you are only 15, I don't care what kind of conditions you have been in or under what circumstances you have driven in, bottom line you are still a complete rookie driver.

The answer is if you are getting a camaro, get a stupid stick shift... everyone knows that..... You aren't going to drive it like a baby. You are going to want to go fast and peel out and do burnouts in front of hot chicks like all these other idiotic 16 year olds with their stick shifts posting in this thread.

"Sorry to break this to you" but I completely doubt at 15 you are a seasoned driver. You are also implying that you have driven by yourself on busy highways??...is that legal?. At 15, I don't care how good you think you are, you never stop learning when you drive. I hate when people will never admit the obvious. No one bashed you, they are just looking out. I noticed a lot of the older members agreed with me? Doesn't that prove anything? All of them have been in your position. I ASSUMED you cared about the car being faster based on all the "a stick is totally faster" responses. I speak out of experience. I know a lot of kids that have awesome cars, only to wreck them when they get stupid with their friends. I'm not saying you will, but based on what I have seen, I am only stating what I think could pose a threat. Be careful...

And to answer your question, neither tranny is "better." The car won't be any faster with a stick. It's all preference. I personally wouldn't care what tranny is has...its a camaro man! Also what kind of camaro is it? V8, V6? And what year?

Only get the stick if its a V-8, pointless for small engines, and dont think autos are no fun, i used to think that, now that i have my truck i realize autos arent bad, i put the pedal to the floor and i can fishtail it do burnouts and all that stuff.
plus it isnt bad having a free hand.
So like i said dont get a stick inless its at least a V-8
