is this a common problem? does 2nd gear (or shift forks?) need to be replaced? how hard is it, parts, etc.? thanks in advance.

sounds like a shift fork might be bent. i am no transmission mechanic though. is this on a 400ex?

i have my 400ex service manual here and these are the possible causes of gears jumping out.

worn gear dogs or dog holes.
worn shift drum guide groove.
worn shift fork guide pin.
worn gear shifter groove.
worn shift fork.
bent shift fork shaft.
i hope this helps some. at the least it should narrow it down a little
