Im looking at a 400ex that needs work right now. Im finnaly moving to a 4-stroke and the 400 will keep me happy.

I need a quad thats gonna be super reliable, and make decent power.

Now this quad im looking at has a scored cylinder and a scored cam. My plans for it are just a 10:1 406 piston and a stage 1 cam. I want to keep it mild and reliable.

Questions:
What mm piston is a 406? I used weiseco in all my 2-strokes so Im going to stick with them here.

Whats the best gasket kit?

Will I have problems starting with the stage 1? Should I put another chain in it?

Ive been rebuilding 2-strokers for a while now, so im good with motors, but this is my first 4-stroke quad.
Thats all I have for right now, so I appreciate any info.

Thanks
Barry

What type of riding will you be doing with your quad?

Trails with the occasional mx weekend.

Lots of hillclimbs too, thats what I live for.

It will have an axle and extended arms and better shocks, so im not worried about the quad itself, but I need a reliable motor with some balls.

IM an old 2stroke rider also and last fall bought a 400ex . and wanted the same thing . the wiseco will be fine if thats your preference mines prox but anyway. cosmetic gaskets are the way iwent with mine and the hotcams stage 1 also worked well for me and have had no starting problems. I installed a crf450 cam chain when i did mine.

I am pretty sure a 406 piston is a 86mm. I am cant really help you on your other questions.

Ok cool. Does the crf450 chain go right on? Right ammount of links?

I was worried about starting because of the whole decompression thing. With 10.8:1 I think i should be alright.

i run 11:1 in my 406.
406 is an 86mm bore.
i use cosmetic gaskets on all my stuff and i havent had a single problem.
the crf450 chain goes right on.

definately get the cometic gaskets. I got tusk and already blew a head gasket, and everything was installed and torqued properly. And I am only running 406 with 10:1 comp. I have heard other people have had trouble with tusk head gaskets as well. I am waiting for my cometic to come in so I can swap it out. I also did the crf450 cam chain, and it was an easy swap, and it looks alot more tuff.

Good Luck

is the cam scored on the lobes or journals? either way your looking at replacing the head or rockers.

Not sure, I dont have the quad yet. It sounds like he didnt change his oil the whole time he had it. It probly clogged the oil passages in the cam and scored it. Hopefully the head is fine. Well see...

exactly what I was thinking... if the cam is scored, the head is probably in need of machining/replacing... juts a thought before you get it and realize your spending more than what you had hoped...

Are used heads really expensive? I just saw one go on ebay pretty cheap, rockers and all.
