How much does a 440 kit hurt the engine reliabily?

it can, if not built properly
if your going to do it, do it right. go wth hd studs, better cam chain, good gaskets, the whole 9 yards

FWIW, Colby says head studs are not needed if it's setup properly.
What you do need to do is torque the stock studs a little tighter than the manual calls for.
I would call him and discuss.
I havnt had one problem with mine yet :macho

Mine isn't a typical 440, but it has been as reliable as a stocker so far.
Almost a year without any problems--still running the stock head studs as well. As stated before, I overtorqued them slightly, no problems to date. I also upgraded to a Hyabusa battery as well, it helps to kick over the 11.3:1 compression w/o a compression release.
Take your time and build it right, and a well built 440 will treat you right.
